I would like to do a DT466 build. I have a lower output (750cc) 13mm CDS p7100 I would like to run on it along with a set of twins. Would it be foolish to start off with a stock short block(completely rebuilt and balanced), or is that just a disaster looking for a place to happen.

You would be suprised at how much the stock bottom end on these will handle... Not sure on the rods, which block do you have? Also, are you going to try and run the stock aluminum adapter plate for the IP???

Then the big question, what are you going to be doing with it?:poke:

You'll need firerings, And the heavier dozer intake manifold, and maybe a good set of injector hold downs, your almost to the level of needing a girdle as well.

Depending on where you want to end up hp wise determines what you need, where do you want to be.

I was told once that 1200hp would not be unreasonable. No sledpulling, or drag racing. Max rpm around 3600. Just a nice delivery vehicle with an occasional trip to a dyno.

1200 hp out of a DT is plenty do-able We have one that is well over 2x that.

I have heard that from a couple of people. The problem is that there isn't alot of information available about a high performance build. Hypermax makes alot of stuff for them, but I'd like to know if I can start out with a low mileage motor, do a complete rebuild with whatever parts and procedures are recommended, and end up with something that will make it to the dyno and back. If I need to start out with a custom cast block, head, crank, and $10k worth of rods, and sleeve kit, I will probably just have another 5.9 built.

For only 1200 hp no need to get crazy with high dollar parts.

You'll need what I posted in my first post and I would get a set of Hyper's sleeves that have firerings in them, A set of rod bolts,a stock "+" head(the best casting),and maybe a "00" cam.
The rest of the stock parts will hold it.

Thank you for the information. I have a burned up motor to do the mock up, and have located a 1990 model engine with 123k mile on it. Do you happen to know what years might have the "+" head, or is it marked on the head casting somewhere? When they balance one of these engines, do they just balance the rod/piston assembly, or do they balance the crank also. I had a small block balanced once and they balanced everything from the harmonic balancer to the pressure plate.

The plus can be found under the intake manifold its prolly a 1" or so "+" I'll see if I can find the years.
We balance everything. for only 3600 its not really needed, But its pretty cheap and then its already done if you want to turn the wick up some more.

I thought the NGD version was the one to get. The one that started in 93, with the intake & valve cover integral, and factory P-pump.
Ron, if you get it up to that kind of power, I wanna go for a spin!!! Is the drive train going to handle it? That's my fear of building a high hp work truck.

You wouldn't like riding with me. I drive like a blind grandpa that's stoned. I sometimes go a month without seeing over 25lbs of boost.

I'm 54 years old. I don't go out cruising looking for people to race. My old first gen is so homely looking that only the young and foolish(usually jacked up, big tired Ford owners) ever pester me out on the road. Do I enjoy preying on them? You bet. It just doesn't happen very often. I built this last set of twins to see if I could tone down the torque a bit. It worked well and I think more cubic inches would be the next logical step.

So, you're putting a 466 in a pickup? I know what you mean about the homely truck. I have a 67 F100 that has 5 different colors on it, and powered by a hopped up 6.
I'm a 466 fan, so whatever you do with it will be golden in my eyes. I had started a 466 swap into a Super Duty...but that's another sad story.

Ron, if your going to build a dt why not put big sleeves in it and make it big to start. Lot of dt's around 600 inch in pulling tractors around here. Hart's diesel in Fayette,Mo. do alot of dt466 stuff in pulling tractors. They have there own dyno and make some real big horsepower out of the binders. You might get some info from them.

I dont go out looking to race people either, but i do like going to secluded area and running it a little.

I dont know how you can resist using the power:poke:

Should be getting quotes back in the next week or so from 2 places about getting this built. I'll be sure to be sitting down when I read them.
