Truckers, lets see your rigs!

What's the difference between the 4MG and the 7FB?

I believe the 7FB was the fist 3406B serial numbers, most of which had a water jacket charge air cooler, rated at a max of 400 hp in a road application. A few later 7FB's went to air to air, which were the first 3406 rated at 425 hp. The 7FB also has a different cam shaft in the pump that has more timing built into it than the 4MG or 3ZJ (3ZJ is the first 3406C SN).

My father had a 7FB in his 379 that he said ran like a raped ape. He now has a 350 hp 4MG in his puller that is a very strong runner, as well as a 425 hp 3ZJ in his work truck that put 500 hp to the ground with stock CAT parts.

Going through Oklahoma yesterday. Quite an outfit.

"The 186-foot long demethanizer is making its way from Exterran in Broken Arrow to a gas processing plant in Fort Lupton, Colorado. The 536,600-pound object is being moved on a specially designed trailer pulled by two trucks in front and pushed by two trucks in back."

The whole set up is 427 feet long and weigh more than 1.1 million pounds. :bang

The 7FB was the first of the B models, 4MG was second, I believe all the 4MGs were air to air engines. With every newer series of B/C model the pump timing got slower and the compression went up as well all due to emmissions.

A air to water 7FB has 14.5:1 pistons and the timing is set at 24*, the last C model was I think 16.6:1 and around 6* of timing.

Not all 4MGs were air to air. I came across a Volvo last spring that had a water jacket inner cooler.

So as far as mechanical engines, would it be safe to assume a 7FB would have more room to grow power wise?

Not really, aluminum pistons will always eventually be the limit to HP, C models have the capability to run two piece just like the electronic engines so therefore more room to build power.

I think for what I'd like to do, an electronic engine will be my best bet.

Depends on what you want for power. Do you want 1,000 rwhp and work it daily? If so then you'll need an electric engine. If you're happy with 650 rwhp to the ground, I believe that could be had with a mechanical 3406. I think my dads C is there now.

While we're back on b models.. My 359 needs some more attention back on it. I just put a set of Antrim extrude honed injectors and made the normal pump mods. What's a good size charger to put on it to keep the aluminum pistons happy?

Also could u fit a set of new style 3 stage jakes on a b if u swapped out the rocker box/valve cover to newer style

The best you can do on the jakes is the 349 series, it is an upgrade from the 346 but still won't match the brake on an electronic engine.

A BW 175963 would work good, just need to down size the exhaust housing after you get it to a 1.32 or 1.58.

Columbus diesel sells a HX60 set up for truck engines but I can almost guarantee it isn't a direct bolt on due to the oil lines.

Is the Borg Warner 175963 the borg Warner factory replacement charger?

If so, my father ran one on his work truck (3406C) with a noticeable gain over the factory Cat charger. He recently switched to a S475 billet compressor wheel and race cover. Which he says is a noticeable gain over the BW replacement unit. EGT's don't get over 900 degrees, I can't remember the gain in boost but he picked some up.

We ran it on his puller (3406B) for one pull and what a difference it made. It's the white W900 toward the end of the video.

But the s475 isn't a direct bolt on. He may be willing to sell the BW 175963 if your interested.

There are numerous S410 variations that BW sells, the 175963 was meant for the C16 and the largest but without a housing change it is a laggy pig.

Well that cat truck looks a little funny under the hood...
