Which pump to go with...

i would buy a 160 or 175 pump in a heart beat, they will be just fine for a measly 500hp. hell i did 458 on stock turbo with the stock housing but with quite large nozzles. 5x.016's a ,0 plate, 18* and a mack rack plug on a 180 pump, with stock 181's in it too. I will also bet money that, once i put in a set of delivery vavles(ddp's or 191's) and an airdog i'll break 600 if i can spool the charger on the dyno.

The shipping within canada to me is killer also, the most costly part of it is the shipping north of alberta. I could ship the pump from western canada to eastern canada cheaper than what i can ship it from alberta up to me (its stupid... same goes for flights, from here to edmonton costs more than edmonton to florida....)

So its all pretty much a loose-loose situation. unless i can find a pump dirt cheap (like this 160/175hp pump which i can have in my hands for about $600) im going to end up paying alot more than the pump is worth.

I have tried PDR, thats going to get wayyy too pricey way too fast! Havent tried PDP, actually forgot about them...

Only 2 pumps in the entire country... Will definitely give those guys a call and see how much they want to try and rape me for it...

My grandpa has offered up the pump on his 97 215hp dodge, its only his yard beater now (the truck is mint with only highway miles on it, hardly a beater!) but he does still use it once in a while so i passed that up. very tempting though...
 
215 pump, silver 64 ddp4's with a home made 0 plate slid about 1/3 forward. made 537 hp at 4000 feet elevation.

replace 64 with aurora 5000 and slid the plate almost full forward made 632 in phoenix this past spring.

now thats impressive..

NOtihng wrong with a 215, had one on my 12V, even though i didnt make those numbers, It wasnt too hard to get to my best in the sig, I dynoed 550 rwhp once but that dyno IMHO was a fluke.. 516, 510, 513 was my group when i did 516, Im sure with more timing, better tuning, a strapped down head and o rings ida been where you are at...

was i gonna get a 12v again? i would get one with a 215 no doubt, but i wouldnt rule out a 180 either

once they are all rebuilt benched and calibrated, they can all pretty much do whatever you want them to..

Brad Ponci has made 630 with a 64/71/14, and ran a 11.34 with it.

GS1000 is running a 64/74/14. 3mm bigger turbine and 100hp less.

12valve= tuning, tuning, tuning!!!!!!!!
 
Whats everyones thoughts on fuel supply...?

I keep hearing mixed thoughts on the stock style piston pump. some have problems above 400hp and others dont have problems @ 600hp...

I have a brand new LP on the truck now so its definitely good and strong. But if its not going to cut the cake for the 500ish HP mark, then i would rather pull it off now while the injection pump is out of the way! It will be so much easier to deal with!

Looks like i might have my super swampers sold so i might have a few bucks kicking around to be able to afford a airdog/fass. if im lucky...
 
i made my sig with a stock lp

it can be done, IIRC, a stock setup is good for 800 plus, i remember readin that on DTR a few times...

why not put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see where it stands? that IMHO is needed on a 12V just as much as the other basic gauges... and aint too difficult to do...

you can diagnose fuel pressure problems, bad LP, bad OFV, and a clogged filter or filters...

all of these have alternatives and fixings...
 
definitely going to install a FP gauge (more than likely just make an idiot light), but i just wanted to know if i should pull the LP now or not as its a F'k of alot easier to do it right now with the inj pump off rather than crawling around under it again!

Guess i will keep the piston pump and hope for the best...
 
Its really up to you.

I did my AirDog 2 years ago and think its worth every penny.

It seemed like every winter I was chasing down airleaks from the old lines and equipment.

The AirDog or Fass make it easy. gas tank to AirDog to Injection pump. Thats it! Plus filter changes are easy, you can do them any where anytime in about 10sec. with no tools. I carry a spare filter with me at all times.

I also did the 40psi spring and can pull the pressure down to about 37-38 with a WOT run.

One other thing I like about the AirDog/FASS systems are they make winter starts easier, they make pressure in the system before starting. You can actually hear the overflow valve letting fuel through while waiting for the grids to turn off.

I was going to mention to you Dave, that if you are running high timing in the cold winter, a Espar D5 diesel fired heater is the cats ass.
I put mine in last winter, and set the 7 day timer to come on before an hour or 2 before I get up and the truck starts like its 90*f out and has instant heat.
This year I am going to wire in the defrost fan so it comes on and defrosts and melts the snow on the winshield.

i had my fuel plate in a very mild position at the time, worked good at my elevation of 6000 but could have used more fuel at the 4000 feet level. Also this truck was set up at the time as a daily driver. Timing was around 18* i believe. I wonder what Brad Poncie was running besides his 64 turbo. Was it fuel only, was his head ported at all, what about a cam, to me that is awesome HP out of a 64 turbo. But i totally agree on the tuning bit, i have gotten a lot better , but still a lot to learn.


Also both of those dynos were on a stock lift pump, but i am changing that now as it didn't like full throttle above 3200 rpm.

Brad has a 160 pump. I think hes at 7xx with twins.

I dont think any ppump choice 160-215hp is a bad choice. They all make enough hp for most.

look SHughes did 794 with 215hp, twins.

Jim fulmer did 848 with a 215, twins.

there's many more, these i see daily.


The air via chargers is more important IMO.

The truck starts (errrr.... it used to...) no problem at -40c (sometimes it even gets lower) and i would like to keep it that way. If i cant start it at those temps its useless to me for 4 months of the year!

Im going to try it at 16 or 17* and see how it goes, if its going to be a pig to start i will back it down to 12.5* again and just live with it.


The espars are the cats meow, but are worth as much as what i paid for the truck! The are awesome though, we have them in all of our equipment and the things always flash right up in the cold.

Just curious, i see some of the FASS/Airdogs are made to be used with the stock lift pump... Are you still running the stock LP or did you ditch it?

The AirDog for the 12 valve eliminates it.
I think FASS has one out also now, that eliminates the lift pump.

As far as the Espar, I picked my D5 up with the 7 day timer for $1000 brand new.
It took me about 6 hours to install though.

This place is the cheapest around. He has been on TDR for quite a number of years.

Once again, im F'd due to my geographical location... For 1k i would definitely get one when i could afford it, but around these parts, those SOB's go for a couple grand for the small basic model, not the fancy dodge truck app ones.

Not that it much matters, the truck fired up great in the cold before and will hopefully continue to do so with a little extra timing.
 
The Espar I have is the D5 universal.
Its NOT the Dodge one. Im pretty sure Espar stopped making that kit.
The D5 has ALOT more BTUs to heat faster. It also has the external fuel pump so you can mount it right by the tank.
It also has the external water pump.
The actual boiler is alot smaller then without the 2 pumps being built in. I intalled mine where the airbox was on my 97.
 
I hope you don't actually believe that. You near 600hp and the stock lift pump isn't keeping up.

hard to argue with one of the ppl i wish had tuned my truck...

I had a stock motor with studs only and valve springs. I did 634 with a single 64-71-14 and the engine had 260k on it. I dont know what it has now but i think its a little stronger than before. I am still using the 160 pump that came off the old motor and directly onto the new one.
