Ok I don't know where to put this and yes it's my first post. I drive a jeep that I wheel often and I'm tired of trying to drive it every day so I need a daily driver/tow rig. I know this isn't tech, but I don't really know where else to put it, any advice is great.

Well I wasn't sure where to put this because I didn't want any bias towards one or the other, I've also search pretty much all day and can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

First off, this is my first diesel pickup. I will use the truck as my daily driver that needs to travel between Oklahoma and Texas. I will be pulling my Jeep like once a month too, but the main thing is this will be my daily driver and I need it as reliable as a used truck can be. I don't have a lot of money to be working on it all the time because I go to school full-time.

I know that the VP-44 tends to go out on the 24V which is expensive but is it goiong to go out for sure usually, and how often? What about the 53 block, only on 24 valves? I don't want to buy any truck that has been modded or worked super hard, or anything with 170,000+ miles. And I want a manual tranny. I'm not looking to spend more than $10,000

So which CTD should I be keeping my eyes peeled for, the 12 or 24 valve?

I loaded up a 2 gen 24V 1 ton today and talked to the owner a little. He said the same thing this truck has cost me so much money with fuel system problems. Also diesel mechanics are expensive and few and far between.

I agree with the 12v it will be cheaper and more reliable. If I ever bought a 24v it would be with the intention of immedately putting the 12v injection pump on it.

Dude, run! Diesels are addictive. Next thing you know you'll be robbing liquor stores to pay for a tranny upgrade.

12v or Common rail... Vp44 are hard to get power out of..

Please its fashionable these days to pile on the VP trucks but pay no attention to these jokers. Get rid of the stock LP and keep fuel pressure up and they do fine. You can get 5-600hp all day and turn it down for daily driving if you like. Whatever you do pay no attention to sleddy. Clueless mofo can't even steer a golf cart.

Yep you are right.. And everyone else here is wrong.. The vp 24v is one making all the power with the least pump failure....

I don't want to run 5-600hp on my truck. I know I'm saying that now but I know guys minds change over time. I really just want the least stress as possible and the fuel problems the 24V seem to encounter, I really just don't want to deal with it.

Says the guy making 450hp with his 12v. See the problem Tejas is that people are really good at picking up stuff on the innerweb that they have no first hand knowledge about and repeating it verbatim because they think it will make other people think they know what they are taking about. Don't fall for it. Putting a decent fuel pump on is a cheap price to pay for the drivability a 24v will give you over a 12v. You're not building a 1000hp sled puller right...

Never claimed to be making high horsepower.. You see mine is a tow rig.. He asked for relaibility... Myself and many others agree that the 12 valve is more reliable than a 24 valve.. Don't take it personal.. I never said that power cant be had with a vp44 its just harder.. And it is 445hp not 450.... If I didnt know any better I would say you have 12v envy??? And how in the hell do you keep your engine bay soo clean???

LMAO doof stop repeating stuff you read on the innerweb but have no first hand experience with.

For reliability I'd question the intelligence of anyone that recommended a VP truck...

I've owned both. Guess which one I drive now?

Bah, my 450hp p-pump truck drives better than it did when it was a 375hp vp truck. My 450ish 12v drives better yet.

Buy a VP 24v, then buy a 12v so you know how much better it is.
