I am having a problem deciding which to go with 4.88 or 5.13 i have a 94 12
valve it is a 2.6 truck ive been pulling 3rd gear but have broken 4 trannys
this year just looking for some input on this rather u have done this or know
of some one who has i want to be able to pull 4th gear and not worry about
tranny problems again

well thats the thing im not quite sure about im running 33 truxus some times
duals

It depends on what size tires and the ground speed you are looking for?

I am going with 4.88s because I am going to run 33" tires.
The ground speed calculator says that with 35s, 5.13 gears will work better.

the 5:13's are usually the gear of choice for 5speed guys. it will let you run 4th low wich will be your strongest gear. a friends has a 3.0 truck that still has the factory driveline under it with 5.13's and he runs 4th low with 6 33x12.50 STS's.

start out just running the 4 tires and get a feel for it. if it seems to be handling it easy then try the duals.

I put 5.13 gears in mine and love it. I pulled third low at the start of the season and very first pull I blew the rear end out and put the deeper gears in and a 33" sts and pulled fourth low and made 20 hooks to finish our season and broke not a thing and mine is a 2.6 truck

Kinda depends on the RPM range of your engine and what kind of tracks and sled you are usually pulling. RPM range from 3800-4500 and with high speed sleds I would go with 4.88's. If you can make power over 4500rpm or hook to alot dead weight drag sleds, then 5.13's would be better. Usually in a 2.6 class the 4.88's work best, and 5.13's work better in a 2.8 class because of RPM range.

well rite now i have 3.55 it usually ran down the track no less than 4200
that i had ever seen i would like to b a lil bit faster and stay around the
same rpm thats y i need some in put it has no problem rite now other than
breaking trannys lol which is really expensive if i would have listen back
when the first tranny broke i wouldnt have been 4 trannys deep but i guess
u live and u learn

what kind of rpm do u turn down the track? and do u have alot of motor work done if u dnt mind me asking?

HERE is his season video.

Nate can answer the questions for you.
He and I will have very similar setups this coming year other than gears so it will be interesting to see the difference.

where i can i find a calculator to see my ground/wheel speed? i am wanting to figure out where m at with this auto trans and 3.73's with 33" tires. thanks

Give me your email and I will email you what I have when I get to work.

I have Dan's calculator program.. works great..

I would 5.13's... If you get more power then you can run duals and a 35" tire...

Which is exactly why I'm going with 4.88's. I run a smaller Southern Kentucky circuit that primarily uses a lighter speed sled and I don't really want to spin more than 4500rpm.

My truck would see 3200 to 3500 down the track I did not have enough hp Here are the mods stock motor with 220k on it no cam no port work nothing is done to it. It has a 465 with a .90 housing some 5x16 injectors hd valve springs and the pump had never been off the truck still the stock 215 pump I put some 5k springs in and dvs with no plate was timed at 30 so that is why I did not carry that many rpms down the track but its something to build on in the future so I can run 35' tires when I get more hp. I would say you already have more power than I do to carry the rpms you do so yours would be a lot higher than mine I was very happy how my truck did with the stock drive line also.

i appreciate the info and believe me i doubt that i have more horsepower. remind u that was 3rd gear but i have nothing done to my motor either has like 280k on it still stock bottom end and stock cam and the head has only ever been off due to not retorqing correctly lol

hmmm It sounds like you should be running more rpm than that. What delivery valves are you running? I would run a #10 or #5 plate and see what happens. Usually i higher timing setting such as what you have will carry higher rpm

He had 0.5mm dvs and no plate.
He was trying for more rpms all year but couldn't find them?
