4.88 or 5.13

I believe you won't be disappointed with the 4.88's. 4.88's in 4th low is a 13.2final. 5.13 in 4th low is a 13.9 final. They are realitivaly close, but you can see a difference between the 2. A truck that tops out in rpm before half track will bennefit from a faster gear. But if RPM peaks right before the pan drops usually, then you should have the right gear.

i appreciate the info and believe me i doubt that i have more horsepower. remind u that was 3rd gear but i have nothing done to my motor either has like 280k on it still stock bottom end and stock cam and the head has only ever been off due to not retorqing correctly lol

Sounds like we're all in the same boat. Minor pump mods, necessary valvetrain mods, box stock charger...just stuck with a crappy final drive in need of different R&P & camshaft.

Lucky sob's that have 6spd's & 3.55's don't have a clue. LOL

The 215 makes power but were and how long is a different story, to get more rpms and to keep it there barrels needs to b changed etc

yea u r right them guys w 6 speed dnt have to worry as much. that was
another option of mine but they r so dang expensive and ive seen a good
many of them break. the way my luck is the first hook it would break.
and dont believe anything cummins724 has to say hes the #1 vp truck
around here or better known as (THE DUCK HUNTER) lol i had to do it.

6spd and 3.55's arent worth a darn when you p-pump it and try to run 4000-4500 down the track. i want to change gears to take some strain off the tranny as well.

3rd gear for me was the ticket but they just arent very strong . what gear do u pull tj 4th or 5th?

right now i normally use 4th low if its a good track or 2nd hi when its real loose. this is with 3.55's

I would need 4.88's to run 5th low for the most strength in the trans but then I really dont have a second back up gear to use when conditions are a little different.

Looking to at least swap to some 4.10's to take some strain off the driveline, but I am gonna need to tune my truck and find some hidden power in order to pull off 5th low all the time as it would be alot like my current 2nd-high final drive, and i had a hard time keeping it lit this year in that gear.

that is another thing that i am kinda worried about is not having a back-up
gear but then again i have only ever pulled 3rd so if i can get the final drive
around where it is now i should b ok

this poor boy is on a tight budget this year. 4.88's would be my choice also, but by the time I buy gears and install kits id be into it for way more than i have available to spend right now.

i no exactly what u mean. work hasent been that great past couple months
but its actually starting to pick up but the snow woulnt quit now. look up
drivetrain direct or randys ring and pinion they both had sum decent prices.
i dnt no if u plan on doin them yourself put the prices wasnt that bad .

yea by the time i buy the R&P sets, install kits, and carrier that fit 4.88 gears front and rear im at nearly $1k already, and thats on the low end.

you are able to buy a thick gear for the front so that u can utilize your front
carrier if im understanding right

thats good to know but only saves me about $65

looks like i either make the trade for 4.10's or keep the 3.55's

I'll agree with you there....because we have a local who ppumped his 24V 3500 and he was having probs staying on top of his charger with our drag sled last fall. However we have a local VP truck with 3.55's & 6spd who was royally handing us our rear last year. I'm hoping to have something for him this year though.:evil

we have one of those vp trucks around here also he has a 5 spd n pulls 4th
low and it really runs good

u can run those gears withany carrier , i run 4:56 /4:63 with stock open 3.54 carriers a good gear guy can make them work ..BTW mark that vp truck is history even lost half of the valves

what does it take to make them work? custom machining? spacers? just redrilling bolt holes and tapping?
