I take it the AFC should be full forward at max boost pressure or just before? I'm at #45 full forward with the barrel ground flat, about .060 off of it. I also ground the front washer flat. How much if any rise is there in the lever at idle vs off?

Mech, if you are fooling with the AFC, you have not gone far enough to win!!

with the stock spring in a 180 pump, with decent control of the smoke down low, my afc is at full travel around 28-30psi, which makes sense, as the turbo is coming up, it really starts to come alive after about 10psi is when the arm starts to move out of the way, 45psi may be alittle to high for full travel, play around with the starwheel, the idea is to tune the afc to where the turbo lights the best, the smaller turbo you have, the quicker you can let the arm move out of the way. what i did is tighten the afc spring all the way (and the housing is full forward), and drove it around, it seemed alot better, and i started to loosen it about 10-15 clicks at a time untill it felt like the turbo was not spooing as quick, this is about where it was dumping too much fuel down low, and putting the fire out. also back your coarse smoke adjustment screw out untill it just touches the arm the the diapham is attached to, that moves the afc level inside the housing, after flipping and grinding down the front washer with the lip on it, it allowed an extra 2-3mm of rearward travel, without hindering front travel at all, this will help you control the smoke down low even more if needed. hope this helps you.

wdimig Thank you. I think I'm making this harder than what it really is.

hey it's not rocket science, just a little tuning, and it does make a big difference once it is tuned right. i was just out driving the truck, and i am amazed at how i can get up on the turbo with just a small puff of smoke, snd then a slight haze at about 30-35psi, after that, well.... you know what happens! i cant wait till a get a 64/71/13SS on this thing. it will be awsome.

Sir,
Correct me if I missed something here, but recently at the open house for that new shop in Maryland a friend took me to,I forget the name already, didn't you get out done by a 4BT?.So much for tuning the AFC.

I had no AFC foot on mine because the arm was too far forward in the pump for it enter through the hole. But I knew it was going to over fuel anyway.

whatever a stock governer spring is

has worked well for many on here.. I ran the stock springs, i never got around to tuning my afc with shop air... its one of those things i wish i had done...

But IIRC about 30 psi is where it should be

Not trying to hijack, but does anyone know where I can get a new afc diaphram?? I noticed mine will not hold pressure.. PM me please.. Thanks

I backed the star wheel off and it's only dropped to #40. I'd like to see it around #30. Looks like I need to steal a Honda valve spring. LOL

"so much for tuning the AFC"? ill let that one go.... yes a 4b did do better than i did, that 4b did alot better than other 12v there that day, only one beat it, and has alot more work done to it than my engine. i would think that if i had a set of twins on my truck, and the amount of fuel that he was running, im sure i would be up around 600hp. just because i didnt put a great number on the dyno doesen't mean my afc isn't "tuned". it runs alot better on the street, and i have a older turbo that is not matched properly, along with 370's and full cuts, not a great combo, that is being addresed.

I thought the governor spring was stiffer than the stock spring?

Hey Kevin. Im assuming you got the shutoff solenoid?

Eric

Yes I did and thank you. I have some governer springs. I'll check them and see what the spring rate is. I started porting the head and set it aside for the night. Bent the only 6" bit I have, so much for that.

He said he was wanting full fuel by 30psi or so. He is already at 40psi before he gets full fuel he said, so he would want something softer.

No problem Kevin. Thanks again!

Eric

sorry for the thread derail earlier guys, let's get back on track. mech2161, did you notice a difference when you set the the spring alittle looser?

wes

There was only 5 or 6 pounds difference. I did some research and the 215 pump has the heaviest spring in the AFC compared to other pumps.
