Anybody done a sport conversion?

For those of you that have done the sport conversion, do the sport headlights require wiring modifications?

Yes, the sports have dual bulbs. I made my harness with some relays. Not that hard.

Wheres a good place to get everything you need other than the dealer/ what all do you need to mount up the bumper and grille? are brackets different/

Junk yard is the cheapest. Nothing from the chrome bumper works on the sport. All new stuff from the dealer is $1100, last I checked.

roachie, ur truck looks freakin bad azz. what color is that?

Thanks, its PR4. Bright red

does anything from the non sport grille work, like the frame and hardware and stuff?

Anyone know where to get just a sport grille?

Junk yards, Dodge, and there may be an aftermarket manufacturer now.

You do need to know that the sport grill wont fit the chrome bumper. Most aftermarket bumpers are styled after the chrome one too. So I wont work on those.

Yes and no.

Technicaly, no. Nothing swaps between the two. Maybe the hood release but, I think its different too.

I just had the grille and was told the frames were the same. I found out that they arent close. I bent my frame to fit the grill and hold it but, none of the bolts lined up. Its such a tight fit that they arent needed anyway. Im planning on buying the correct frame later, this works for now though.

I've got a road armor on my truck that has a winch hole on the top. Here's a pic

I think that where it swoops down would fit perfectly in there?

Just get the 94-98 Sport grill Tim.. Can have it color matched and it won't stick out.. They just look funny with something other then the sport bumper to match them.

I'm definitely needing to do the sport conversion. My bumper has seen better days and just looks terrible now. Three different colors on one bumper is just stupid.

96-98 had painted SLT bumpers 99-02 were the completely different bumper/grille

It is a direct bolt on as long as you have everything, including the brackets to the frame.
Nothing will swap not even the hood latch as the sport latch is longer to accomidate the taller grill. not even the license plate holder will swap.

No need to swap to the sport headlights you will have more choices with the single bulb. I went with the black set on ebay

I found the '01 bumper brackets to be too long to fit properly on my '95. I cut off 1/2" from the ends of the '01 brackets so it would go back far enough to line up properly and I think I had to drill one hole in the '01 brackets.

I also had to modify the front lip of the hood because the studs on the grill are in different locations from the stock grill on my '95. Had to drill some new holes and bend in a couple of dimples because of the shape of the studs.

The latch will work but you will need the longer release rod from the sport model.

The grill frame is also totally different from the '95 grille.

I found a chrome sport grille on eBay and went with the 2-tone look to try to keep the look of the stock setup on the '95.

cumminstrokethi, I think the sport grille would work great on your truck.

Looks like 99-02 sport grill will work together with normal bumper. (those pictures are from internet, they might belong to CompD members aswell)

They will work together if you either cut the bottom off the sport grill or cut out the top cover of the bumper to allow the grill to go down into it. Without one of those two mods it will not work.

I should of did a search sooner....You guys have beaten this topic to death...Very good information...Thanks

I love my sport. It just looks different. I just wish I has tow mirrors that where painted silver like my truck. I had to put a chrome bumper on that I had because the guy who owned the truck before I, tore the hell out of it. I will order a role pan one day. Soon I hope.

Maybe some of these pic's will help put a visual prospective on difference
