Brand New Super B Special FAILURE

It’s ironic that if BD isn’t responsible for the failure considered from oil starvation but still disassembles the turbo for inspection when the turbo is boxed shipped as is? What would they find? Burnt bearings, trashed thrusts, wiped compressor/turbine housings? It was a lost argument from the start just from business practices.

If this would of been considered warrantee at all they would of never disassembled the turbo...

Or Borg is a pain in the ass to call warrantee. If this is the case then it should be considered part of doing business
.
This is a fine example of their customer retention practices.

I had a bad experience a few years ago with customer service about a BD Xmonitor. I will never buy from them again either. I'm sure they don't warranty many parts. It's always someone else's fault that their crappy products fail.

I had the same thing happen when I originally bought a Super B Special about 2 years ago. Made it about 140 miles then boom. Same excuse about it being an oiling issue. I even asked the same questions that you're asking and got the run around. Haven't bought another BD product since. And the turbo that replaced the blown one has about 15k on it and doesn't show any signs of going bad and haven't changed a thing when it comes to the oiling system

I had a similar issue with the same type of turbo, I should have turned them into bbb. I ate the $600 to fix it and will never give bd a dime again

Woohoo! More hatred towards BD. Lets keep this thread bumped up here for as long as BD is a vendor on this site. I truly hope they go under and wish nothing but the worst for them...

I have dealt with Brian Roth at BD directly when they provided me a turbo and TDV in the form of a sponsorship. Trackmaster 850 2.6 modified to be exact. I got the runaround from everybody including customer servive. Never thought it would be that hard to get ahold of somebody there on the phone. Was told in Dec. of 2012 that I would have my turbo by mid to late January.. Didn't receive it until mid to late March of 2013. I tried to get specs on the turbo since day 1 from Roth and associated parties with no help. They also sent me the wrong TDV, a t3-t4, when i needed a t4-t4 since I was currently running a t4 manifold. Here is the funny part....When I called sustomer service, They had no idea what I was even talking about!!! I was told I need a T5 adapter and they don't make one. I tried telling them I was under a sponsorship and he had no idea who to transfer me to. Finally got ahold of Roth and he begged me to run his new t3 manifold with a "30hp" gain over both steed and stainless in a T4. I wouldn't budge. Finally 3 weeks later I received the new TDV because they "forgot to ship it". First trip to the track... Charger was JUNK. Couldn't get it to light at the line or even half track at that matter. Ran a 10.1@80mph in the 1/8th. 2 months later I finally find out the true specs on the charger. It was a clipped 74/74/1.25. I tried telling him for the next month that it needs at least an 83 turbine and send me a 1.0 housing. He wouldn't budge and insisted i needed to adjust the tdv to spool it. Swapped a E.D 71/87/90 on and loved it.. truck ran best time of 7.36@99mph on a 2350us tune.

Let's just say I will never buy another BD Item ever again. There is alot more to this story but don't have time to type it all out. They do however make an ok intercooler and trans cooler but thats about it.

Rant over. $.02

To add more to my story it was sent in they said a few days to repair and It would be back out. Lots of phone calls later I had it almost 2 months later.

I also had a friend that had a fabbed tank intercooler that's lasted 2 months under 40-45psi of boost and the cast ones came out a month after he bought it and they told him to kick rocks and they wouldn't do anything for him

If you had a 74/74/1.25 then you had the 83 turbine......

Check out their "short throw shifters"

They all have the same casting flaw, they all break in the same place... You break it and get told to eat it cuz of abuse...

I can't believe there's been that many turbo failures from them! That's ridiculous.
You'd be amazed at the amount of turbo's they sell. Not taking sides either way, but you sell that many turbo's and you're bound to have some failures.

I've had one break on a customers truck, and they next day air'd him a new one

Again, not trying to take sides whatsoever, but i've had the opposite service from BD as what is portrayed here.

Following this thread, I must point out We sell a lot of these and other Turbo chargers without issue. When a warranty issue arises that is the Direct result of our manufacturing defect we honor our warrantee obligation. Unfortunately, the internet and forums can be one sided and misleading of the actual/all facts. Does manufacturing errors occur? Yes, they do from time to time. However these turbo chargers are not built one at a time, they are done in volume. Normal process would indicate that if it was a manufacturing issue many within that production run would have an issue. We do not have excessive failures occurring as some would try and make it appear.

Unfortunately, in regards to our customer service or lack of as some would put it. We are working diligently to correct our weak points, we know employee vacation schedules, affect our call in or inspection and production response times. We are and continue to add, promote, and train to help rectify these issue, we do strive to satisfy our customer’s needs, it is input such as this that will make us a better company for all in the future.

The fact is the failure analysis was performed in accordance to every Turbo manufactures instructions. The analysis of the failed Turbo was a result of a lubrication issue.

You clearly state that if you ever made a mistake you would be the first to admit it.

You missed damage to the wastegate excited or not that is a mistake and you admitted it.

Quote:
“Hmmm...
I apologize that my truck had been down for literally 2 weeks and the turbo was installed after I got off work around 3 am. That is no excuse for missing that I know but people make mistakes and I reckon this one is going to come back and bite me in the a$$.”

Quote:
“That is correct. As I stated earlier, it was about 4 in the morning after I got off work. I was excited to get the truck back up and running because it has sat for 2 weeks. Understandable right? Plus, it was a brand new turbo. You don't really expect something like that to happen. Though, now I will be sure to check the damn thing meticulously.”

Working a graveyard shift and starting a project like this at 4am plus being excited to get everything all back together after your truck has been down for day’s/weeks, has the potential for disastrous out comes. This is evident by your quotes:

I find it difficult to think that if you missed as much as you did as mentioned above that you could not have inadvertently missed a supply/prelube issue. Or the fact the truck sat for weeks and all the oil has drained back to the pan as well.

Regardless you have stated your opinion, our offer still stands that even though this is not a Warrantable failure we will offer you a replacement turbo at cost.

Regards,
Hector

How do you explain a "oil supply issue", rebuild the turbo on the customers dime, they slap it back on the same truck, and it runs just fine?
