Well, its been a long time coming, but 252K miles, 112K miles of Twins, a total of 217 1/4mi. passes with 107 of those being 12 sec passes, My engines TIRED. During racing in Indy, I started getting a bad miss at idle, TONS of blow-by and blue smoke.

We pulled the engine last night and found broken rings on #1,4,5. I don't know how the block survived as good as it did, but everything in the bottom end was tired. There was a little copper on all the bearings, and all the rings were all shot. The crank had some score marks on it too.

I'm planning on dropping a 80K mile stock short block in with a Helix 2 cam and springs and hope to get another 5yrs, 250K miles out of it, by then I'll be ready for a new work truck.

I will admit to laughing a little when parts of 5's second ring fell off the piston into my hand. LOL

Give you a good excuse for new rod bolts and studs .

Am I good or what??

That sucks though, but at least everything survived.

If you want to bottom tap the head stud holes in the new block, I have a spiral fluted bottom tap...supposed to not take as much meat out of the holes?

Anything else you need I might have sitting around?
Chris

Sounds like you got good service out of it. Any other goodies besides cam and springs? Bigger Twins?

Tell the guys with the flip flops to watch their toes!!!!!!!:hehe:

Yes, the S700 twins are going on, Woodruff just finished the top charger, so those will be going on as well, should be a spooling machine!

He was the designated "pretty boy" of the evening.

Thanks again for the tow rig home, and I'll let you know if I need that tap, Woodruff wants to see my block, and if its not too bad we might just bore this one 20 over with a set of new pistons. I let you know if I need anything.

P-pump, Port and polish???

No, I like the drive-ability of the VP and Comp box enough that I'm gonna stick to it. I've come to the realization that I'm not going to break any HP records with it, so I'm happy with a fast, (hopefully high 11sec) street truck that runs smooth and clean.

Lyn was working with just socks on his feet until the floor got wet! I'm sure the OSHA headcheese was frowning from his post in the evening sky. For the record, I wore black because it rocks, not because you couldn't see the grease.

And to keep the thread on track, these were the worst worn-out cylinder walls that I've seen in a Cummins yet. Granted, I've seen deeper scratches and more damage but the top 1.5" of each cylinder was completely smooth, no hash marks at all. Just plumb worn out. :rockwoot:

Not a problem...I kinda liked driving that laggy charger home, made me appreciate the twins:D

Beside the flip flops, I did notice that the upper rod brgs seemed to have plenty of wear. They look happy to be out of there.
The cylinders???? I do believe a ball hone will not be enough.

There's a divot in #4 about the size of a pea. I strongly doubt a .020 overbore will take it out. Strangely enough the broken compression ring in #5 didn't leave any scarring?

Yeah they'll def. need an over bore. I doubt a 20 over will take out the divet in #4. All the upper rod bearings had copper execpt one and that one had chatter marks on it.

oh well...i think im do for a new IP NOW!!

You can run mine this week if you want to see if thats your problem. Its just sitting there you know, come get it.

I could have made a fun comment with this one, but Brandon's helping too much to be mean :)
