cam chang benefits

any thoughts about a maxspool II ?

I have a Maxspool 2.5 coming for my truck, but until I get the motor in I won't really know anything. I do know Greg is a good guy to deal with. At least he has been square with me...$.02

Are there any solid "claims" or specs by any of the manufacturers that indicate one would be substantially better than the others?

Probably not until someone spends the money to run all 3 of them and dyno all 3 of them then all your gonna get is each manufacturer telling you why there's is better (as expected) and then each customer telling you the benefits of their brand of cam (as expected).

200 miles on my Hamilton and my EGT s are out of control. I can hit 1350 pulling on an on ramp. Any clue??? I do have a smooth idle and my boost levels are down a touch. The pyro moves real fast though, kinda like my rpm s. I have 90hp stix, stg 3 pump and a 62/71/14 with an intercooler. Im very confused.

Are there any links which give details on swapping cams in a 12V? At this point i'm just interested in having a look to see what's involved. I'm sure the upcoming s468 would like a cam sometime in the future!

I think diesel power mag does a cam swap this month. A red chevy on the rollers is on the cover

First I would check to see if there is any new boost leaks from doing the install. Lower boost and higher egts are the opposite of what should be going on with a better cam. It should have more duration giving more drive pressure and complete burn. Could also be a timing thing. Check the valve lash make sure it is in spec. Goodluck

The big stick likes fuel! Adding fuel with DL & TST stack lower the egts across the rpm range! Milage up 1.2 to 1.5 back to back trips with winter fuel. Just recorded 19.66 MPG.( @ 65-67 mph ) This tank about 21 or so. Egts at flat cruse 455 to 625.
on the road the add fuel low sure makes it pull the garde with alot less throtel! Spelling error! 550 miles today. good night Gracey. Thanks Zack & Geoff!:charger:

Figures :-p I'm pretty interested in a cam- I'd like to see what happens. swapping and dynoing three cams on a truck just for giggles would be interesting... but painful and expensive :-p

i have a H2 in and a HD (big stick) to swap in if someone wants to provide the dyno time in the maryland area. i'm willing to dyno back to back cams without changing anything else.

Brett you game?

Is power up or down? What injectors, turbo , head work, intercooler , and what smarty programming are you running?
First, check for the easy things. Boost leaks, valve lash, too much fuel for your setup etc....

These cams really move a lot more air than the factory cam will allow. On trucks with closely matched injectors, programming and turbos, you will see major improvements in driveability, power and egt reductions. However on some heavily fueled trucks I have seen major increases in EGT. Before you second guess your decision to buy one of my cams hear me out.

In a truck that is slightly overfueled, the added fuel will help clean up the excess fuel and lower the egts as well as make a few more ponies.

On a heavily overfueled truck there are a few things to consider. First after you have enough fuel to make heavy black smoke, you are effectively using all of the oxygen in the cylinder so any extra fuel you add has no oxygen to combust. What you see in this instance is that the extra fuel turns from droplets to a vapor. Anytime a liquid turns form a liquid state to a vapor it absorbs a lot of heat. It is almost acting like water injection to some extent. A lot of pullers and drag cars use this super rich state to keep their pistons alive.
Now introduce 20% more oxygen to the equation. That fuel that was busy absorbing heat is now producing LARGE amounts of heat thanks to the added combustion.

In short if your power is down and temps are up, something is wrong. Look at cam timing, boost leaks, and valve lash.
If your power is up and temps are up then Congratulations on the added combustion! You were and are heavily over fueled. Get some larger chargers and some head work!

Love the power, don't get me wrong. Just scared on the hot exhaust o meter. I know the overhead is right and the timing as well. I can't find any boost leaks. Is there a easy way to find a hidden boost leak?

best bet for finding boost leaks is build a adapter to take the place of you air filter and connect it to your air hose and pressurize your intake while the engine is off. make sure to use a pressure gauge!! it was the only way i could find the boost leak i had. i could only build 10 psi at wot talk about high egts

I was changing lanes today passing a car on the highway and looked down and say over 1500. I wasn't even doing 80. My boost only dropped by a few over all, I thought that was kinda normal with this cam

It is pretty basic. You take a smarty, Mp-8, 90hp nozzles, and a stg3 cp3........enough fuel for about 800hp give or take. Then you throw in a 62mm turbo sized for about 575hp. What is hard to understand about the overheating?

any thoughts about a maxspool II ?

I just installed Greg Hogue's Maxspool 2.5+ two weeks ago. It was a bit much for my stock turbo to handle. But man it was fun to drive. Instant boost. Now with my Silver Bullet and stock fuel it's back to about stock spool up. A little slower but not laggy like most people complain about. There's no way I could street my Silver Bullet without my cam. I just got my first hook on the cam and turbo Sat. night. 4th low on 4:10's, 3,800rpms all the way down the track. I wish I would've tried 5th. Without the cam I would've never been able to keep that charger lit. Make a cam be the center of your engine buildup. It'll make every mod you install perform better.

As for which cam... That's for you to decide. I went with Maxspool because I called him directly and he took the time to answer every question I had. Several phone calls worth mind you.

Maxspool Engineering has several grinds to choose from. 2, 2.5, and 2.5+ in regrind or Cast Billet. A 3.0 is in testing. And he'll also make you a custom grind if you have an experienced shop that'll degree the cam in and check your clearences. At Maxspool there is no one size fit's all cam.

I like my Hamilton big stick.. I went in with it when I put the new engine in, also put the new turbo on as well with intercooler.. I have stock like spool up.. I too have noticed that my egts seem a little up since the new engine went in.. I think it could be my guage, I have a extra one im gonna check to be sure shortly.. I do see bigger injectors, and compounds in my near future..

I will provide a MaxSpool 2.5++ for the shoot out . I have 250 cast billets being ground.
