Convertor lockup shudder!

Well I changed the tranny fluid today and it was so bad it looked like motor oil it was so black. My truck used to be a work truck so who knows when it was changed last... I added the lucus additive and some mercon III so far. I will look around for the additive. I left enough room in there to add it if need be.

Well shudder is still there... so I dunno WTF is up now.

I'm going to wire the TV valve wide open and see what it does.. Need to make a gauge to check line pressures as well.

Weird thing today is my trans temp guage is going all wacky... like it'll be at 170* and jump to 200* and down to 150... then climb way up... go down... weird stuff like that.

Sensor is in the hot line, so not sure if the gauge is just being flakey or something is going on in the trans.

be careful, mine tc was shuddering for a few weeks before it was rebuilt. good thing i rebuilt it when i did, the TC bolts were loose. i imagine in another week or so they would have backed out.

The converter I'm using is supposed to hold 600hp... I'm at 525hp 1200ft/lbs when I have it "set to kill" though I don't tow or drive like that normally so I dunno...

I still need to make a gauge to check line pressure... I want to make sure there isn't an underlying problem.

I might end up having to dump $1200 for a triple disk. Starting to think I should have just swapped in a 5 speed instead!

you dont have a warranty on the TC?

Lubeguard does wonders. You should try adding shutterbug before anything though. That has prevented transmissions from coming out and even a Toyota that shuttered so bad we thought it was misfiring/knocking.

Depending on who made your t/c..........I've seen tcc shudder just by using synthetic oil. Granted all these were cheap tc, not meant for any power above stock. But I've fixed these tcc shudders by simply changing the fluid to conventional, all Mopar too......

Yeah it did have a 1 year warranty, but it's about 1.5 years old now.

Lubeguard didn't seem to make a difference.

Thanks!

I just wanted to comment that about 2 weeks ago I was towing a trailer loaded with a truck on it and I completely lost the torque converter clutch.

It went from feeling like it was slipping a bit to nothing at all in about 50 miles. I still have overdrive, but just no lockup.

I was running a single disk clutch, was told it was rated to 600hp, but I guess that was optimistic. Looking at putting a 3 disc one in now.

Got another converter ordered in. Recon S5. Multiple clutch TCC, rated to 1200 ft/lbs. The biggest and baddest off teh shelf converter I can get other than the ATS 5 Star or whatever they call it.

Be sure to post about your new converter when it's installed. Now you just have to worry about leaning too hard on the stock input shaft.

I use the stock input shaft as a door stop... :hehe: I have an Opie input and output in it.

Should have the converter next week hopefully. 4 disc lockup, hopefully it will hold up. :st:
