D80 vs GM14 bolt

WOW!! And those are for a Dana 80??? Those are absolutely HUGE. Is that a guy doing it privately for his own rig or is it a business that sells them? Seems like the diesel truck pullers would have already found those types of shafts instead of the common talk lately about 35 and 37 spline stuff. It's like 37 spline is old news for them... Guess I know where I need to go hang out to find stronger/bigger parts for the 14bolt, or heck any diff. - the 4 wheeler sites. Pirate is probably is the largest isn't it?

i know this thread is over a year old but i thought i would add what i know so when people are serching (like me) they will have it.
this is a pic of a dana 80 pinion (left) and 14 bolt, 10.5" ring gear (right). they are almost the same size. cant remember the spline size, but they are so close that you cant fit one yoke on the other, eather way. the 14 bolt also has three bearings on the pinion. the third is on the other end of the pinion gear like a ford 9". and also like the 9" the pinion of the 14 is lower on the ring gear so it has more contact area. the 14 uses 1.5" 31 spline shafts on a 45* cut. the 80 uses 35 spline (1.5") and 37 spline (1.580") shafts on a 30* spline cut. both can be upgraded if ya want to spend the cash.

What year 14 bolt is that?
Does the AAM 11.5 have the bearing support?

its the older 14 bolt, 10.5" ring gear, up to 1999 or 2000 i think.

as far as the AAM 11.5 i dont know about the third pinion bearing. i've never had one apart but i dont think that it does.

that bearing support ont e front of the pinion would greatly reduce pinon flexing under load.

i konow several ostpa smfwd pulling trucks that are running a 10.5 14 bolt with a spool and scs axles. and they have had few if any problems. if they will hold that i doubt you will have any problems

At 6200 pounds and half the tq, less wheel base. A 600 HP Street Diesel will destroy parts that hold up to a 1500 HP SMFWD.

According to Diesel Power, the AAM 11.5 doesn't have the pinion support, and uses the same old 1-1/2" 30 spline axles.

I haven't ever been into a 11.5, but all you would have to do is look and see if it has the bearing cover on the front of the diff.

I take it you are being smart?

Let me re-phrase it:
If it has the 3rd bearing on the pinion, like the old 10.5's, there will be a bolt-on bearing support on the front of the differential housing. Since you have to take the pinion out the front, like a 9".

You mean like a front loading rear end?

I wasn't trying to be smart, I thought you were referring to a front loaded one. Like the 9" that the whole center section can be taken out.

I have been around gassers for years pulling with the 14bolts. I have never seen a ring/pinion go by its self in one of these axles. Now I have seen other damage from a crappy welding job trying to lock the diff to broken axles but never anything to do with the actual ring and pinion. I am sure you can now get a spool for one as its been since 2001 since I last played with one and can't quite remember everything from back then. There are enough gassers pulling with them anyway that someone might have just come up with a spool that will take larger shafts and higher spline count.

All in all, I personally think for an all out pull truck it would be a great option and they are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!!!!!!!!

its not worth arguing about when you already know everything.

But it was worth a smart comment. Attaboy.

In ANY Diesel motorsport, saying part X holds up in a gasser Sooper Dooper anything is almost meaningless.

If you build your truck to that "spec" you will have a lot of failed parts.

The 11.5 AAm does NOT have the third pinion support bearing.

Makes me mad.

Well all the smfwd trucks that run cut tires, ive ever seen are running at least a F106 if not a 172. Unless you arnt reffering to the blown trucks that ive seen. No oem 1 ton axle will stand up to what those trucks put out sorry im calling BS
