Drive Pressure loss=HP gain?

How would you modify an undivided 18cm non-wastegated exhaust housing? I say either keep that housing and run an external gate, or what I said in my previous post. Here is a pic of how I ran my external gate.

You are wrong, that I know for a fact. I have first hand experience with a modded 12cm housing on a truck that was at 500-550hp with nitrous. Jason's truck is no where near that, he is just over 300hp, heck he could probably get by with an unmodified housing at that HP level.

Bet you would have made more power with an external gate. And I'll bet Jason is probably well over 300hp if he had lower drive pressures and a better turbo.

Your missing the point. Obviously more power can be made with a better/larger turbo.

i dont know what can be had on all turbo's but on my S366 we were able to punch the gates out to around 13/16" and there are 2 ports .... that meens it should out flow a 40mm external gate by quite a bit .also added a high throw cover to let the linkage travel further . DP is around 62 psi on 52-55 psi boost on my twins .

What size we re they to begin with?

Is that a HTT charger?

no the charger started out as a bd 64/71 they were around 1/2" to 5/8" ...... the htt stainless has 2 1" ports i believe , i was to cheap to upgrade my cast housing . plus with a 14cm housing i currectly have the a/r and gate combined have to be close to the same flow as a 13cm with slightly larger gate IMOP . i could be wrong though .

FWIW, the area on two 13/16 holes is slighly more than half of what it would be on a 40mm.

Not to argue just want explanation so i can learn , 1 - 13/16" hole is ruffly 21mm
so 2 should equal 42mm . not sure how that references to area / flow though ? like i said just want to learn !

13/16" = 20.64mm . Area is (pi)r^2, r=10.32, r^2=106.5, (3.14)106.5=334.41mm^2 for each hole. 334.41x2= 668.82mm^2

40mm r=20, r^2=400, (3.14)400= 1256mm^2

When it comes to area, as the radius (r) increases, the difference is squared. This is how the numbers become such a large difference.

THANKS ! GOOD INFORMATION

Here's my sweet ghetto setup, complete with a mini hood stack LOL I'll see how it will do after I get done with TS and DPC.

I sure hope so!! Latley I've been going backwards :badidea:

You will most definitely pick up power. Probably a lot of power. I'd get a 38mm external wastegate and a bigger down pipe and I bet you pick up 75+hp.

75hp with a gate and bigger DP? Seems a little steep to me. :poke:

Eh, I bet 30-40 hp would be closer. Although the gate and DP would let him do more mods that could net him well in excess of 75 hp.

Probably is a little steep. I was a couple of drinks in to the night when I posted that. I wouldn't be surprised with 30-50hp though. Especially on nitrous.

Yeah, id say 20-40hp may be possible by letting it breathe on the exhaust side a little better. It definately will help the turbo last, and give you the potential to run a lot more fuel and :nos: :rockwoot:

I would like to know what the difference is in drive pressure from running my hx35/16(non gated) to my hx40/16. My hx40 doesent have the gate working right now, but i just bought a cheap boost controller on ebay, and ill probably set it around 36psi. I would have to think drive pressures would be down pretty good with the bigger downpipe, and lowered boost. Plus i dont want to spin the 40 too hard. It may handle it, but i dont want to push it.

Gate setup looks good JQmile. Are you gonna run it out the hood?:rockwoot:

You're taking advice from the master of making less power with more mods, that's what's wrong there:hehe::hehe: I kid, I kid, all in good fun.

I'd like to know too. It would seem that the gated housing would pose a little more restriction going in, due to the internal gate design, but it has the advantage of flow going out. If I can find one of each, I'd hook up a dp gauge and run em just to satisfy my curiousity.
