electric water pump

summit racing has a 2 1/16" water temp gauge that comes with wireing and relays to turn on and off a electric water pump and fans at what ever temp you program it at . it is like 125.00

Before this season I was also looking on going with an electric water pump and after much thought, research and talking to afew big shops and a few modified pullers...I decieded to go with an external-non-stock style pump that mounts in the lower rad hose. I went with an EMP-Stewart pump http://www.stewartcomponents.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=ElectPump

The reason I went with this pump is because the reliability is much better (garantee'd for 10,000 hours on the pump) but my main reason for going this way was because in the future if I ever get up into something bigger (Mod) the block will be filled making the stock style electric pump usless. With this pump I can still pump water thru the head.

I was just trying to save my self spending more money in the future.

Oh, one other reason I didn't go with it...EEP was unable at the time (June) to tell me how they route the belt if I don't have AC. They had the routing for having the AC pump on but not with out.

Here are two pics of my pump.

thats a good question....what belt does everyone use once they do away with the factory W/P?....

If you use one of the block mounted pumps (stock location) you need a belt 7" shorter. dayco #5080740

Uh,.................. I use the no belt method, works great.

Yeah, I am doing that this comming year (finally picked up a generator) so I can charge my battery's at the pulls so I don't need the alt.

About the belt...is the 7" shorter belt for when you still have AC? because no one I talked to could even figure out routing for not running AC and the electric waterpump where the 3 contacts for of the belt were the crank,ALT and tensioner.

I still don't see how you could run with that electric pump if you didn't have AC. How many guys still are running there AC compressor? and if so...what for if these electric pumps should really only be used for track only applications.

come on.

also, running an external electric water pump in the radiator lines will not circulate water enough in the head when the thermostat is closed. when its closed, the block located water pump circulates the water in the head correctly.

The routing you posted for the NON-AC setup won't work because of the idler. Look at my two pics above and you can see the idler and the bracket and you can see why it won't work.

ALSO....

let me ask another question about the cooling system them. If one is only running a truck track truck...how many are running an actual thermostat? Im not, mine is gutted (not sure if there are pics on this site of mine but on the TDR there is) I have more than enough cooling with my setup thru the head and the block. I check it regularly with my laser temp sensor checking all the frost plugs...never a problem.

Uh. The tensioner doesn't care if it's wrapped 80% with belt or 20%; it will still push out. Works without waterpump or A/C.

Edit- If it's a true track truck, you won't see a belt. Multiple deep-cycle battery setup eliminates the alternator, e-fan eliminates the mechanical fan and waterpump is replaced with an electric version.

Well, there must be something up with my tensioner then because I wouldn't alow for that belt routing last spring when I tried before ordering my electric pump.

My truck for now is running an ALT for one reason...because of my GM conversion nothing in the dash will work without the ALT hooked up. I don't need much anymore seeing I have my autometer tach now and all my other guages and I will be taking care of the problem before spring but this past year after wrenching for weeks to get it ready...taking the alt off was the last thing on my mind.

There are about 3 guys in are class that are running the water pumps with no AC. I will see if I can get a couple pics.

Just a question but couldn't you install an idler pully in the place where the A/C compressor should be? Or is there a clearance issue with the GMC conversion?

I assume you're still using the stock fan? If not, just run a belt around the crank pulley, alternator, and tensioner. It won't clear a block mounted electric water pump, but if yours is gone, you should be fine!

Chris

try moving the tensioner over one notch. it has several holes so you can adjust its rotation.

Im not running the factory fan either (dual electrics). I still have the pulley there just for the belt. Like I said above...this year its all comming off but I tried a bunch of different stuff last year with the idler pulley and couldn't get it. Oh well, good info for anyone else looking for it!

How hot does your water temp get running no thermo? I guess that is a good idea for a track only truck, just less parts to worry about.
