Gate or Ratchet

We use a Quarter Stick which is ratchet and we also built a pedestel to mount it on

Yes the standard car length cable will reach - or at least it does in my ford
 
Is there a mechanical difference between the ratchet and gate style shifters or is it just a difference in terminology?
 
Yes there is a difference. A gated shifter has a full range of gears, like a normal car would with a floor shifter. But it has "gates" to stop the shifter in each gear. You can bang the shifter like a ratchet and not worry about missing a gear or going too far. I much prefer my gated shifter, Turbo Action Cheetah, to the ratchet I used to have.
