Gear ratio and Tire size

My theory on loose/muddy tracks. Wide open out of the hole, up a gear.
Why, you ask? Shouldn't I baby the go pedal, and look like a tard, trying to search for traction where there is none?

If the track has no traction, you know you can go up a gear, and still get out of the hole. Once the tires are roasting, its hard to get under the turbo. Be patient, and don't let off the throttle, like the Fluteman wants you to.

The weight on the sled will come up, and you gradually will get traction, as the down pressure increases. If you do it right, you will snuff it at the end, but you will be in front, as the rest of the monkeys will be back 50 feet, still trying to feather the throttle, like spinning the tires 500 rpm less will make them dig on marbles, or grease.:welcome: :hehe:

:clap: :hehe: :clap: :hehe: Sounds like a plan.

I hear what your saying sleddy but I have not seen that approach work yet out here on these hippie tracks.......

"Hippie tracks".........hehehehe.

Next time we meet out there, you pull your truck the way you want, then let me hook it. :kick: :ft:

That is allmost scarry letting sleddy behind the wheel of your truck :evil

Gene,

I think you are right about picking a big gear and coming out of the hole hard, however, as long as you are in front of a sled like "Old Ironsides". The sleds we pull out here are run extremely tight and are real hard to get rolling, unlike vegas where we were able to run with the sled. Winning hooks out here are very rarely over the 275' mark.

-Tom

If your spinning your tires and not moving the sled then how does the wieght ever get up on you Gene?

In 2005 and 2006 until the motor went south, I liked the 4:10's, 4th gear low, and 35" or 36" tire combination.

Scott, if the sleds that heavy, park the truck, and go have a talk with the sled guy, because it is not set right.

You know, we don't pull Lowry and Bauer sleds every night back here, we have a few antiques, about two years newer than the spectators stepping on the sled as it goes by...

Part of pulling is adapting to sleds and tracks. If its that bad Tom, better put a set of 215s back in, and a 160 pump, so you have the advantage over the low power guys!!!LOL

Guys were hitting 35+mph track speed at some of the pulls this year. I don't think 31MPH is too fast it is actually probably a little slow especially with a drop pan sled. At Scheid some of the 2.8 street trucks hit almost 40 mph wheel speed.

40mph wheel speed seems a little high. I would guess that alot of 2.8 street trucks would run in the 33 to 35 mph wheel speed. In order to run 40 mph you would need to 4500 RPM, 5th low, 4.10 gears, and a 33 in tall tire with a 5600 of course .

So do you not think 40 mph can be done with 5000rpm's 35's and 4:10's in 4th and low and a couple big a$$ chargers?
I think its very doable, but I just can't prove it yet.

I run that setup(410, NV5600 with 33 tall tires) i run 2nd hi or 4th low at 4800rpms down the track, you would have to go to 5th low 0r 3rd hi to get that much wheel speed. 2nd hi at 5000 rpm is roughly 32mph, but i run 2.8 charger

What was your ground speed in 4th low at 4800rpms (410, NV5600 with 33 tall tires)

5000 RPM
4.10 gears
35 in tire
5600 TRANS

5L=46.5 MPH
2H=37.50 MPH
4L=33.50 MPH

on paper its doable. on ice its doable. doing it with enough traction, not doable in a common rail dodge.

i will be at TS's event. you look me up, if he goes down the track at 5k i will pay for his entry fee.

Ground speed was around 27mph(that was in 2nd Hi 4th low was alittle slower getin out of the power range) at its fatest part now mine isn't a common rail just so you know, but i leave the line at 5500 when it hooks drops it to 4800 out here in Va we run alot of real tacky clay tracks, dont know that comon rail can leave that hard but also haven't run that much in Ohio and Indy to know if mine would turn 5000 going down the track either

Coppess hit 3rd gear with 3.54 gears, an s400 with a large housing. Tomac and Burkhard can speak up what they hit at scheid. Scheid was a long track, not saying 40mph happens all the time, but I recall 35+ isn't uncommon for a certain DMAX from michigan.
