Haisley axles vs. SCS axles

i know of a guy that was breaking scs every pull. I have not broke any, but the splines sure are twisted, and that's with a non agressive tire.

JUST SOMETHING TO LOOK FOR IF YOU ARE RUNNING WELDED CARRIERS AND YOUR TWISTING OR BREAKING AXLES MAKE SURE YOUR SIDE GEARS ARE WELDED TRU IN THE CARRIER. I HAD A CUSTOMER THAT BROKE AND TWISTED EVERY BRAND OF AFTERMARKET AXLES YOU COULD THINK OF JUST BECAUSE THE SIDE GEARS MOVED ON THEM WHEN THEY WELDED THEM IN PLACE AND IT WOULD PUT THE AXLE ON A BIND. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL THAT THEY ARE OUT OF WACK IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GETTING THE AXLES TO SLIDE IN THE SPLINES WHILE IN THE AXLE HOUSING.

ALSO I SHOULD HAVE A FRESH BATCH OF THE 37 SPLINE AXLES AND DRIVE FLANGES IN STOCK IN A COUPLE WEEKS IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED. THEY SHOULD BE AROUND $950 FOR A SET

i know they are larger but the scs axles in my cousins pro alky truck are twisted over a half inch and scs told him to keep running them, they wont break and they will probably be the best set he'll ever own. i know as far as their drop boxes and reversers, and even axles for the bigger rears, they are the best money buys. do they make the larger axles like van sells? your not really comparing apples to apples here. your trying to compare a stock size axle made out of better material to a larger axle that is probably made out of the same material. of course it will be stronger, but if you have twisted splines you have probably just moved them to where they are comfortable. ive only seen one photo of a broken one, and like he said, it looks like heat had something to do with it. if you are getting to the point where you are breaking these aftermarket axles its probably time to upgrade to a 106 or something of that nature. what gear ratios are you guys running, may be time to try something that isnt putting so much stress on them. lower gears arent a bad thing.

Lower gears will help put less stress on many parts of the driveline, but it wont reduce the stress on the axle shafts.

What material are the axles made from? Who makes the axles?

Anyone running stock F-450/550 37 spline axles? Wondering how they compare to scs 35 spline axles... They sure are a lot cheeper!!!

true, but with less stress on the rest of the driveline, you can cut the driveline loose faster and removing a large part of the stress. imo

Won't bolt up, different axle flange patter. I think ford used 37 splines in the d80's in the duallys.

I've got a Ford D80 Dually axle from a 2004 in mine and it has/had 35 spline axles...I wish I knew for sure which axles did come with the 37 splines... I need a new carrier...

With a little machine work they bolt right up...redrill the bolt pattern and turn the OD down.

Not all dually's have 37 spline. When i got mine, it seemed to be pot luck in the junk yards. They are in some 450's and all 550's... 350's dont have 37 spline.

If one were going to buy a new set, minispool and axles, should i just go with haisley 37 spline from the start?

550's have Dana 135's, I know th older 450's or what was called "Superduty" back then had 37 splines. I have a open carrier on the shelf with I think 513 gears for a 37 spline if anyone is interested.

Are you sure that the older 550's dont have d-80's in them??? I know the newer ones have d-135's, but iv seen parts listed for d-80 in f 550's!?!? And i found a striped d-80 in a junk yard and was told it was out of the f550 that was right next to the rearend...

I went down this route a few years back, and the ford axles seemed to be longer by several inches. Of course I was sticking them in a SRW dodge. Maybe they work well in the dually dodge rears. Is there enough spline on the axle that you can cut the extra length? Then you have the machining work.

Have you actually put a set of the ford 37 splines into a dodge rear end?

Yes...they measure the same lenth...i think it was like 36 5/8? Their is an axle that is wider, i think it's out of an E450. The shafts in it was like 40" long.

Isnt a srw and a drw the same housing just the wheel hub different???

Yea the wheel hub is different on the dodge d80s between the SRW and the dually. The axles are different lengths though between the SRW and the dually. The cab and chassis share the same axle as the SRW.

I would be interested, PM me if you have them.

thanks Adam

We have a complete Dana 80 with a new welded carrier from Scheids and SCS 35 spline axles with about 8 hooks on all of it if anyone is interested. Thought I may throw that out there.

I have a Ford 2005 Dually Dana 80 and it has 35 spline axles in it. I also have a ARB air locker with 37 spline to put in it. Went through this last pulling season. The shafts were not the same lenght on both sides. Now I don't remember the measurents exactly but from memory last year. I wanted to put the Haisley 37 spline shafts in it and they only make them in the Dodge length, which iirc was roughly 36" for the SRW and 39" for the Daully rear. My axle shaft lenghts were like 38" on one side and the other side was like 41" or something. I remember Haisley thought they could machine down the one and get it to work but couldn't do the long one. I called all over the country to try to get some made. Everyone that I talked to said they could not make any axles over 40" as they would not fit in there heat treating furnaces. I finally found the company out in California, I think, that made the Haisley axles for them. The said he could make over 40" shafts as he has a bigger machine or whatever. He said he would make the shafts for me. Needless to say it was VERY expensive. I found it was cheaper to shorten the axle tubes to fit the Haisly Dodge Axles then it was to have axle shafts custom made.

Then I realized that Ford changed the bolt pattern in 2005 for the Dana 80 F350 to a 8 X 200mm over the 8 X 170mm that was in it for 99 - 04. And nobody made any rims that would fit it I would have had to go with stock dually rims, swap the rear hubs or get custom made real racing rims. So I gave up on this axle. Needless to say I have a 37 spline Dana 80 ARB I to sell and I have a 35 spline SCS MINI SPOOL also to get ride of. The truck is now getting a 106.
