Haisley axles vs. SCS axles

We have a complete Dana 80 with a new welded carrier from Scheids and SCS 35 spline axles with about 8 hooks on all of it if anyone is interested. Thought I may throw that out there.

I have a Ford 2005 Dually Dana 80 and it has 35 spline axles in it. I also have a ARB air locker with 37 spline to put in it. Went through this last pulling season. The shafts were not the same lenght on both sides. Now I don't remember the measurents exactly but from memory last year. I wanted to put the Haisley 37 spline shafts in it and they only make them in the Dodge length, which iirc was roughly 36" for the SRW and 39" for the Daully rear. My axle shaft lenghts were like 38" on one side and the other side was like 41" or something. I remember Haisley thought they could machine down the one and get it to work but couldn't do the long one. I called all over the country to try to get some made. Everyone that I talked to said they could not make any axles over 40" as they would not fit in there heat treating furnaces. I finally found the company out in California, I think, that made the Haisley axles for them. The said he could make over 40" shafts as he has a bigger machine or whatever. He said he would make the shafts for me. Needless to say it was VERY expensive. I found it was cheaper to shorten the axle tubes to fit the Haisly Dodge Axles then it was to have axle shafts custom made.

Then I realized that Ford changed the bolt pattern in 2005 for the Dana 80 F350 to a 8 X 200mm over the 8 X 170mm that was in it for 99 - 04. And nobody made any rims that would fit it I would have had to go with stock dually rims, swap the rear hubs or get custom made real racing rims. So I gave up on this axle. Needless to say I have a 37 spline Dana 80 ARB I to sell and I have a 35 spline SCS MINI SPOOL also to get ride of. The truck is now getting a 106.

What ratio are lookin at fellas?????

went with the mini spool for now cuz its easy to install and will work just fine. some point during this season as i rebuild my money tree i will be re-gearing to 4.10's and may go with the welded carrier but most likely stick with the mini.

also got the hook up from peter on the clutch and saved a few pennies, i was expecting the clutch to cost more so i am happy. driveline should be stout, still unlocked up front but shouldnt break stuff just yet.

What material are the axles made from? Who makes the axles?

THE BILLET AXLES ARE 4340 THAT ARE CUT TO WHAT EVER LENGTH I NEED SPLINED AND THEN HEAT TREATED. NO BIG NAME MACHINE SHOP JUST A FRIEND THAT MAKES ME ALL KINDS OF CUSTOM PULLING PARTS. I'VE RAN SOME OF HIS 106 AXLES W/ GOOD RESULTS. SO I DECIDED TO TRY SOME 1 5/8 37 SPLINE D80 AXLES. I'M ALSO WORKING ON A D80 W/ 1 3/4" AXLE SHAFTS.

Are you sure that the older 550's dont have d-80's in them??? I know the newer ones have d-135's, but iv seen parts listed for d-80 in f 550's!?!? And i found a striped d-80 in a junk yard and was told it was out of the f550 that was right next to the rearend...

Depends on how old for awhile they did put D135 in F550 and there are lockers on say for them right now on ringpinion.com. The newer ones have s110 in the 550's and 450's.

I know someone who was looking at building 1 3/4" axles for D80's. Cost pretty much killed it. It was gonna use custom spindles. We talked and I told him most street classes require hydraulic brakes. Was going to put in a ring gear snubber, etc, etc. It was shaping up to be a super sweet axle, until he said with the brakes it was gonna push the price of the axle up to $5000.

You wont regret it. I wish I would have went ahead and got the 37splines the first time! Did you go with a welded carrier?

Do you like the welded carrier. Several people told me the reason I was breaking axle shafts was because of my welded carrier. They said to lead a carrier. Found a leaded (posi-lock) carrier and it was way better on the street. Even though truck gets driven on the street only to test drive I could really see a difference. The onthe night in Liberty I broke an axle on the drivers side (common for me) and the leaded carrier let go on the pass. side. I may go with 37 splines but I don't think they are going to hold these big tires!:bang

Yeah how are you going to get 1.75" axles throug a dodge Dana80 tube? That also means the acrrier has to be machined out pretty thin where the bearings mount and since I have seen those sheared off before I don't think that is a real great idea either. How are you going to address these issues?
