im trying to decide what clutch to go with in the pulling truck. i have a southbend 3850 dual disk in my DD that i was going to take out and get rebuilt and put it in the puller, but i have been told that south bend cluthes arent worth a crap for pulling all the time. when i pulled my DD i ran 4th gear 4 low and never had a problem. I have been looking at the haisley comp puller weighted clutch. What would be the best way to go? Is it all in the driver and what gear you go in, like lets say u go in 4hi, its gonna be harder on it than 4th low correct?

got to a iron giant with full fermaic discs and dont look back

i love my south bend...

that being said, if this is a full time pulling truck. i would keep the SBC in your daily driver, and spend the coin on a haisley comp puller.

like i said, i love south bend, and Peter is a great guy to work with, but i havent seen a SBC last 100+ hooks in a 3.0 truck like a haisley can.

No where in the above post is there enough info. Five speed? Six speed? What ring and pinion ratio are you running? You still run a VP? I don't think you'll turn enough rpm's with a VP to ever hurt an iron giant, but you may run too big of a gear and hurt it. With that said, I'd have to agree with getblown5.9 that a McLeod clutch will generally last longer than South Bend when used for pulling. Just my $.02.

I'd go with sintered iron disks anyday. You might call Kenny's Machine. He can make you a twin disk weighted puller if you'd rather, or his triple is not much more than Haisley's twin. One last option for the SB would be to try his "new" disks. They look similar to sintered iron and may last a while longer.

I have a 4200 sintered iron twin disc clutch from Powerparts Eng. They are crower disc. I ran it last year with no break in at all. Finished the truck, took it to a pull and hooked it. The more i hook it the better it feels. It cost less than the SBC feramic because you dont have to have the bronze inlay in the flywheel. I personally dont like Peters feramic material. Not nockin his clutches because my brother runs a cb dd but everybody i know that has run feramic has had troubles. If its a Full time puller, get a Haisley, Powerparts or Kenny's.

Haisley or Kenny's. There is also a guy in Kentucky think it is Trav's 4x4, I know he does lots of gas clutches. Those work great, just don't know if he has done anything for a diesel. Maybe look him up and ask. Good luck.

Ran Haisleys Dual disk comp puller in the old truck, beat it hard and worked great every time. Although the clutch can be used on the road, I honestly believe it wears faster. The guy that bought my truck pulled the clutch when I sold it to him, said it looked brand new other than looking "hot" slapped it back on and drove it on the street every day...a few months later is was shot. These clutches need to get hot to get a good gripping surface.

the truck is a 97 5spd. im not for sure on the gears. i'll have to check. can someone explain to me what a sintered means?

Haisleys clutch is very good for pullin but i dont know if id recommend it for street use

My opinon is south bend has some clutches that work good. If and only if your not trying hero gear 10+ final drive numbers every time. No clutch will hold up long to those final drive numbers. Haisley makes a great comp puller clutch. Love the adjustablity of the pressure plate and of the weights.

I think south bend started using sintered iron now also. Correct me if im wrong.

use kennys clutch and be done with it.he builds them himself and his service is awesome.none better

Yes they are.

Another issue to consider is weighted versus non-weighted. AFAIK SBC is not building any weighted clutches.

full feramic there called on the discs...
I know dmax tripples are weighted from sbc
and me and peter talked about weighting mine on the ford but settled for the full feramic discs

So are they actually sintered iron being called feramic or is it a different material?

SBC has weighted clutches for the Duramax but not the Cummins?

I think it is the same material as the feramic buttons but is on the disc like sinterd iron is. The fermic material was supposodly Peters special concouction to be better than sintered iron. I dont think it is. Peter says it is so hard that without the bronze inlay it wont work right. Well what about the other three sufaces? They dont need a softer material to hook? If going with SBC, stick with the ceramic buttons and you will be getting a good clutch.
