Haisley Comp puller or SB clutch?

guy who bought my truck pulled the clutch out yesterday it had 22 hooks on the full fermaic discs and still looked like day they went in new

SBC is fine for pulling if you don't try hero gear everytime. My puller uses a 3850 ceramic button and works great! I don't try hero gears tho and I don't ride the clutch!

That being said in a dedicated puller I wouldn't suggest anything other than sintered iron disks. mine is only ceramic because it used to be a DD and I didn't have the $$ to upgrade last time it was out.

Pull your SBC out send it to Peter have him upgrade it to a 4200 with sintered iron disks and go pullin!!

No where in the above post is there enough info. Five speed? Six speed? What ring and pinion ratio are you running? You still run a VP? I don't think you'll turn enough rpm's with a VP to ever hurt an iron giant, but you may run too big of a gear and hurt it. With that said, I'd have to agree with getblown5.9 that a McLeod clutch will generally last longer than South Bend when used for pulling. Just my $.02.

This is true about the final drives. If your 97 is 3.55 equipped get used to 3rd low until you re gear like me unless you want to burn up any clutch. 4.10s you might be able to pull off 4th low.

Bad thing about 5spds you really need a deeper gear ratio in the diffs to be competitive. :(

the truck is a 97 5spd. im not for sure on the gears. i'll have to check. can someone explain to me what a sintered means?

What RPM you plan on leaving the line at? What size/tread tires? Turbo? Still a lot to come into play. I had 26 hooks pulling hero gear (2nd hi with 3.54's and 33's) on a 3600# 12CB clutch in '07 before it got retired. Still had a few left in it but not many. Toasted one 3850# 12CB in 3 hooks with the same setup. I'm on another one as we speak but I believe the VP truck is getting retired. The new truck will be P-pumped whether 12v or 24v and I will be going with a McLeod or a Kenny's triple. Start out running with 2nd hi with 4.10's and 33's leaving the line somewhere between 5k-5500 RPM. Eventually in the season, I'll do the driveline a favor & use 4th low and change ratios but that is still cloudy as to which I want to run. Guess that'll depend on how the charger lights. May be TMI, but figured that's always better than not enough.

As far as finding out your gearing, drive the truck @ 60 mph. As a general rule of thumb, in 5th gear you will be running ~1800 RPM's with 3.54's and just at or above 2000 RPM's with 4.10's.

I think it is the same material as the feramic buttons but is on the disc like sinterd iron is. The fermic material was supposodly Peters special concouction to be better than sintered iron. I dont think it is. Peter says it is so hard that without the bronze inlay it wont work right. Well what about the other three sufaces? They dont need a softer material to hook? If going with SBC, stick with the ceramic buttons and you will be getting a good clutch.

I wasn't exactly what it was, but I had heard they were sintered iron...guess I can't believe everything I hear LOL

I'll be using a weighted clutch so unfortunately SBC isn't on my list.

Get a Kennys, we got the input shaft upgrade and clutch with bronze inlay for 2100.

A few months ago we toasted a SBC 3850 just on a dyno pull it first slipped at 525hp, it would even hold to get full boost, but some people have good luck with them...

use kennys clutch and be done with it.he builds them himself and his service is awesome.none better

x2 it will be the last clutch you have to buy, no way know how will it slip not even off the line

They're Sintered Iron, I don't have a pic directly of them but here is the pressure plate with one next to it.

Pulled the trans and it last night, engine is almost ready to yank

My 3850 lasted 2 seasons and a bunch of street abuse when i was under 600hp and turned no more than 4k rpms.

I went to a 4200 feramic last season and after 19 hooks it started to have an issue locking up coming off the line. Im going to the full iron disks and not the puck style next year, hoping it lasts a little longer.

Do a kennys triple disc with sintered iron and u will love it 4 hooks on each sbc and they were both toast runnin a triple not one problem. If u search internet sintered iron is the last step of clutch material its used in old forklifts dozers old jd clutch packs and extreme use. I pull 5th low in a six speed with 3.73. Ask fordassasin he just got a brand new one he probably could post some pics

I bet if you tried that with Kennys dual disc you would have gotten the same results. NO DUAL DISC WILL HOLD HERO GEAR EVERY TIME! Ask Scott Vorhee's SBC stared building triple disc's because the IG wasn't holding because he pulled 5th low EVERY TIME.

If you ”have" to pull 5th gear you need a triple disc plain and simple. I bet a SBC triple would hold just as well as your Kenny's triple does, but Kennys is cheaper (still a good product) and you went that way. It just irritates me because your constantly comparing apples to oranges putting a dual disc up against a triple OF COURSE the triple will take more abuse!

Mark, people aren't just talking about a triple versus double clutch. Compare the amount of hooks guys are getting out of the Haisley clutches (even the street twin) to some of the SB's. I'm not trying to be a basher of SouthBend, but just because the internet says they are the best doesn't mean it's true. If the new material for the SB's is sintered iron, they should hold up much better.

Every single southbend clutch that failed me were due to the spring loaded hubs failing. I was melting them out or blowing them apart. After that happened, upon removing the clutch I noticed that only one side of one clutch disc was gone. The other 3 sides were like new yet.

the only reason people need a triple is because thwy do not make the power they think they do. If 3.0bguys can run a weighted twin for a season, theb people tearing clutches up any sooner than that are doing something wrong.

That was directed at Not Enough Smoke because he constantly compares them that way. I understand sintered iron lasts a lot longer on a pulling clutch than ceramic or feramic pucks will. Bit people who try big hero gears on any Clutch and then say its junk are not setting their trucks up correctly. I have a 3850 12 ceramic button clutch in my puller. Is it the best choice for its purpose...no. Its more of a daily driver weekend warrior clutch like mine used to be before I bought another truck. Does it work for me and my little 2.6 S4 truck yes, but I don't pull hero gears and I don't ride m clutch out 20 30 feet everytime.

Mine is also solid hub which is better suited for pulling. I am just trying to offset some of the people who trash a clutch because of those two reasons then come in here and try to give a good company and a good guy a bad name. Peter has been nothing less than awesome to work with and I will continue to use his products and send him business.
