HE351 swap onto my 12 valve

Well, a little while back I put a HE351cw onto my 12 valve with a 50mm external wastegate. My last dyno run was 407hp/998tq. I have a drive pressure gauge that should be here tomorrow, after which I will tune my wastegate more precisely. I am scheduled to make another dyno run on Saturday, after which I will post the results. Only major complaint right now is I lost 3 mpg with this setup.

Were you running an hx35 before? Will be nice to see your dyno results. I'd also like to see your drive pressure.

I put an he351cw on my 1st gen 12v. Runs 100deg cooler and spools faster. Still can't find anybody who makes a larger exhaust housing though.

Yes I was running a stock turbo before, all I changed when I did this was the turbo and wastegate, and adjusted the starwheel a bit. I won't be able to get a true reading in the difference of EGT's, as I moved my probe from post turbo to in the manifold. I will post readings and numbers as soon as I am able to.

I chose this turbo because I wanted fast spoolup. I spend most of my time between 1500 and 2500, so that's where I want my powerband. If I expand it upwards, it will be with the use of a second turbo.

I just got threw putting one of these turbos on a buddies 1st gen and its a huge difference over his stock turbo, we just need alot more fuel now.

Ran it on a dyno today. 447 hp and 999 torque. Right now my wastegate is set at 32 psi boost, which is about 55 psi drive pressure. It stays under 1.25:1 drive to boost until just under 30 psi. But by 35 psi boost the drive pressure skyrockets to 65 psi. Those are pretty good numbers, I know, but that's only a gain of 40 hp and 1 tq from my stock turbo with boost controller. BTW pyrometer hit 1400 on the dyno, I can push it higher on the street if I stay in it long enough.

Yeah Im pissed for the amount of time and money I have into this. It starts to light at about the same RPM, but when it does start to spool I thought it spooled faster than the HX35. I wasn't expecting to gain much horsepower, but I thought my torque would have gone up more.

dude, you gained 40hp with no penalty in spool-up... how are you going to complain about 40hp gotten so cheap!?!? LOL!

torque breaks stuff and impresses toothless gasser trash... horsepower wins races. 1000ftlbs is plenty.

$1100 for 40 hp? $500 for the wastegate, $400 for the turbo, ~$100 for the exhaust and intercooler tube stuff, $65 drive pressure setup, plus a 3mpg loss?

I bought my he351 for $300 and sold my stock turbo for $250. Ported out the internal wastegate.

I'm not sure why your drive pressure is so high compared to others I have seen though. What changes did you see with your egts?

Any pictures of how your wastegate is set up?

He351 would be a lot better with a little bigger housing. Would bring the milage back up. I can't find anybody who makes alarger housing though.

ahh, I didn't realize you had so much money tied up in it... I was thinking a few hundred bucks for an HE351... I didn't consider the gate and all that stuff

prolly lost the mileage from the spring adjustment

maybe try tightening up the afc again and see if the mileage returns

obviously wont spool as well then tho...

and forrest, hp wins indy. for just about everything else its all about the torque. i dont care about hp numbers i want torque cuz torque is what moves things

tank

just cuz you have it does not mean you have to show everyone every time you leave a stop light

: )

ps - i hear ya, you are right...

I have the self discipline to drive smoke free most of the time. I really only have mileage numbers doin 75 mph. I need to take a longer highway trip sometime at 60 or so, cuz mostly I just stay around town otherwise. I'd really like to find a 12 cm housing for it. And my stock turbo is trashed, that's what prompted this whole endeavor. My goal is 450 horsepower 1200 lb/ft of torque, then I would be done until I was out of college.

I agree, I would love a little larger exhaust housing on mine, like you said 12cm. As far as I know they are not available.

I have asked htt turbo about any he351 upgrades and they said any larger wheels would place too much stress on the shafts. I'm sure there are quite a few people who would buy a larger exhaust housing if somebody produced them.

So now I am thinking about trying an he351ve from a 6.7l with a wastegate actuator for the vgt. They are really cheap with a variable exhaust housing that you could convert to stationary or use a wastegate actuator to control it. You could sell your wastegate and it would pay for an almost brand new 6.7l turbo.

Just think it being a future investment for twins. Im still on the fence on swapping my turbo out for the 351.

They don't make a 12 cm housing I don't think. I ported the housing out on mine and it controls boost fine.
