well today i fixed my oil leak on the gear housing this evening and put the motor back together an set the pump to ~20* with stock headgasket an headbolts. damn my luck went down the road didn't boost over 20psi and blow the head gasket or floated the head?:owned: idk. either way im screwed right now.

in your opinion, should i replace gasket? or do a motor swap? the only thing wrong with the other motor is it blew the turbo. easy fix.

So you fixed a oil leak and blew a head gasket?

How did you set timing? Did you set timing by have engine at TDC via timing pin set then pin the on injection pump and then figure out how much to advance the timing by figuring out the degrees per inch via harmonic balancer to get your 20ish degrees?

Seems strange that you blew a head gasket by fixing a oil leak.

Explain how you set the timing at about 20*???
I don't get it, no boost and a blow HG?

Need MORE info......... hurry, this thread is still on top :)

.

i used a protractor on the hermonic balancer to determine the degrees. is this even a good way to do so?

but i think i had my valves out of spec. cause all the valves were slaping the pistons. now i offically feel like an idiot.

you couldnt hear the valves slapping when you started it?

setting timing with protractor = bad idea

adjusting valves wrong after setting timing wrong = fail

you got more problems than a bad hg if all that was going on

59 ford- i could boost just fine. what i was getting at is that i wasn't gettin on it real hard.

haha thanks! but i got complete 12v motor sitting in another truck imma swap out. it has less miles on it anyways.

have somebody set the timing with a dial, and adjust the valves

buy a set of studs

i hate letting people do my **** for me though is my thing. i got a dv socket just need the adapter. an the studs. will when i go to complete overhaul this motor i screwed up.

well it sure sounds like you need that guy to stand there and tell you what to do so you dont junk another one

OH WAIT, i see why your having all these issues, the sliencer ring dude, its killin it all

WTF? No you cant use a protractor to set timing on a stock pump. So were did you have the pump at when you knocked the gear loose? if it was at TDC then your timing was over 30-35 degrees depending on were the pump was set to start with. How did you get the valves that far off to hit the pistons? They would have to be a ways off for that to happen and it wouldnt want to crank over on start up. You need to let somebody that knows what they are doing work on your truck or at least show you the right way to do things

look. im not calling myself a pro at this stuff by anymeans. it made since to me at the time. i dont sled pull... i dont drag race... all i do is come here for knowledge when i need it. an it started up fine. the valve lash was WAY over spec. CLEARLY. an to be honest. there really isnt many people that know much about timing and what not, but now i know NOT to use a protactor for timing :badidea: i finally found a dv socket in my price range. ebay $25 free shipping. couldn't go wrong there. next time i get teh bright idea to do timing. ill do it with the dial indicator

would be nice huhh? and an ahh crap. that was it all along! :Cheer:
