Holset Turbos on LB7's

Thanks for the tip!! What flange will the 17 on the H2E have? I have two VERY competent machine shops locally. They'll do anything I ask if its possible. And right. That helps.

Speaking of exhaust housings...how does the IHI housing compare as far as size? Does IHI use nomenclature such as "x" sq-cm housing? Or flow ratings to compare? Surely there is a way to pick a Holset or Garrett housing that "matches" the IHI housing. More or less.

Here is the reply I received from Holset:

"I have found a match based solely on compressor maps however, without detailed engine data I cannot confirm it. It is roughly in-line with our HX40 range. Please see the attached file for the compressor map. Some unit conversion will be needed for you to confirm the match with the IHI. There are no fitting kits available for this application"

I provided them with as much detailed engine info I could find...but apparently it wasn't enough to be sure. :)

On a LB7 a stock holset is very laggy in my honest opinion. Tried many different exhaust housing's and same results. Once modified it worked pretty well. We used a a HX50 redesigned with a 21mm exhaust housing. 4" exhaust flange. Will drop right on to a T4 pedestal kit.

EDP...do you mean a stock HX50 on a stock LB7 is laggy? And what housing was first bolted on and produced the laggy performance?

When you say "once modified"...do you mean getting the 21cm housing/4" exhaust flange installed? Did you have to do other things to the HX50 to get it to work?

I was under the impression I would be needing 16 or 17cm housings. So did you start out bigger than 21cm?

I suppose looking at your white truck there...it would be reasonable to assume our power levels are light years apart and I would have to determine where in your power level did you notice the laggy performance.

Kinda wondering if the HX40 is actually a better choice here at stock power levels.

Thanks!!

We used the HX50 on a different truck then the white one in the picture.
Upgrade list was the following
PPE hot +2
1792 lift pump w/ pick up in tank
Afe intake
4" exhaust
Dual fuelers
stock sticks
HX50 with 19 housing the first hook which gave it some drive pressure numbers I didnt like. Then went to a custom modified 21.
It really liked the 21 modified housing better but I think the ideal setup on this thing would have been a 19 modified. I still have the charger if you would like to try it out I could get a 19 made for it...?....

Thanks for the input. Your offer is appreciated. But I'm not ready to bolt anything on at this time. I'm trying to make some deals on a pedestal. There are a couple I like but haven't decided between them yet. When I get to that point I'll contact you and see if you still have the HX.

In my honest opinion the Holset HX50 isn't an upgrade for anything. There are much better choices for compressors, turbines, and housings in the Schwitzer line and Garrett.

If you're trying to save money, go grab a GT40 off of a DT466 and you've got yourself a 500 charger with 5 different exhaust housing options, at least 6 compressor options off the top of my head. S300 can be configured just as easily.

Actually it made 670hp as a drop on replacement without injectors. Not to bad for an upgrade if you ask me.

I was looking at the pedestal from an ATS setup or the fabricated pedestal from Pacific Performance Engineering PPE. Its 300 series stainless I believe.

I would recommend the PPE pedestal or anyone that is as good of quality and material for almost any of the drop on t4 chargers out there.
If you are looking for just the pedestal let me know.

Brayden I hope you understand but I wont be releasing the compressor size and dimensions. Housings are one thing.

The truck that I am talking about
had just hot+2 no custom tunning or any previous dyno time or tunning.
Dual fueler stock sticks, 4" exhaust, stock intercooler, 1792 lift, and that was it.
There was plenty of ponies left in this setup but did not want to push the stock motor any further.
