For those that need to build an air shut off on a budget...

I have about $50 into the shut off itself, and cable, misc parts. I got some conduit for free that I will run under the truck and up the firewall to keep the cable from getting snagged on anything. I tested it a few times and it slams shut without a problem, I don't think that 1/8" hole for the pull pin is gonna let enough air through for the engine to run still. The only thing left is to pick up a 5" rubber fernco coupling to clamp the air shut off to the turbo.

5" blast gate from ebay- $14
springs- $5
misc hardware-$15
50' cable-$12
cable eyes/clamps- $4

Not enough time to get it ready. I pretty much gotta have all my stuff ready by about 6-7 pm wednesday so I can load it up since we are leaving at 10. I'll be getting it together after TS tho and be able to use it the rest of the year

pull pin with a cable...simple and effective i tested it on the work bench and all i can say is dont put your fingers in there if you wanna keep them

Looks good man. Wish I couldve had that stuff Last friday night. Had to help a friend finish up his truck before a pull and built a half way shutoff. It was enough to pass inspecion at the track so that was what we were going for. Diffinantly not the nicest lookin one ever built. LOL

looks good only issue i see might be to thin of metal in the gate and a big turbo suck it in

OK Have you figured out how to stop the sled from pulling the cable out of the truck? Not being a SA just looking for different ideas.

no idea on that. i know that my pull pin ring won't fit thru the conduit so that should stop it. and then on the rear of the truck i've seen guys use a couple zip ties to attach the ring to the cable...that way when it pulls, the pin binds up at the conduit and the weakest link is the plastic zip ties and they will break.

anyone else?

oh and house, the piece of metal that came with the blast gate was some thin gage sheetmetal. i replaced it with some 1/16" plate. sounds thin, but I know for a fact that I can not hold it on the edge of the work bench and bend it. cant even flex it. had to cut it with a cut off wheel.

How you keep the pin from falling out and it closing if it starts to bounce or are the springs that strong?

You changed the plate in the gate? That's why I haven't gone that way yet.

How well is it sealed?

I've considered doing it with blastgates before, but I don't like the idea of extended operation with the gap between the casting and the sheetmetal. And the fully-sealed blastgates cost hundreds of dollars...

I think it will work great! Looks awesome, and I think it will stop plenty of air.

One time I put a plastic grocery bag over my air filter at the carwash because I was degreasing my engine. Long story short my truck never even thought about starting lol and it sucked my filter flat lol

looks good better then the rain cap people use i have seen that not choke the motor it just sat there trying to run

I used a push pull cable that you get from a place like Inland Truck Parts they use them to engage a PTO for a hoist. It has a hard center wire that you cut off to length and if the sled pulls the wire it will just pull the whole wire out of the plastic outer housing. I am also running a gate similar to this and at idle it won't kill the motor but the minute you touch the throttle it will choke it out. I have had the pin pulled going down the track and it stopped the motor dead in it's tracks. The sled cable was to tight and when I bounced a little it pulled it out.

When that time comes that you dare spend more for your air shut off than your oil change and you want a precision piece.......
