NV 4500, how strong and how do they shift?

3rd to 5th is all you need i say go for it

On the topic of drag racing.....Where is that picture of you in the "dirt drags" taken? I'm in Western NY and haven't found a county fair yet that holds dirt drags. But then again, maybe I don't need that abuse on my 5600 after reading this.

ive heard that the 45 is a very easy trans to rebuild.

what would be a fast shifting trans that would hold up nice.

oh, well mine would not come apart

took it to the tranny man and let him put the kit in

when i picked it up i asked him how you get the shaft out and that is what he told me

either torch or air chisel that one bearing apart

mine would not come apart any other way

did yours?

i was gonna say mine just came apart i didnt need a torch or air hammer. but it all depends on how hot the parts got and how much if any loctite was used on the bearings i could see a bearing being that stuck depending on the use and abuse.

well that doesnt sound like its for me.

i understand that auto's are for racing. but i have already gone a 12.92 with my 6 speed. i want to get low 12's or high 11's before its all said and done. what is the strongest six speed out there? Jeff Prince maybe you can chime in?

I'd say go for it if you dont want to do a auto.
Jeff Prince did low 12 sec. passes. When I talked to him he said he was using a homebrew dual disc clutch from various manufacturers. I think it was SBC and Haisley IIRC.
He also said the truck had an 11 sec. pass in it IF he could get the clutch to stay together. He never said anything about the tranny staying together.

Anyways, you would be doing 3rd gear boosted launches. So 3,4 and 5 is all you really need.
If you want a quality tranny, call Standard Transmission they are in Texas.
I had a rebuilt unit from Blumenthals and it lasted 8 months, I really didnt even beat on it. Their warranty is 6 months, when I called them to see if they could cut me a deal they said NO.
I then went with the Standard Trans rebuilt unit. When I sent them my Blumenthal unit, they said that the parts that were in it were not OEM New Venture parts, they were some off brand.
Just some heads up.
Good Luck.

One other thing, I think you dont have to get a new clutch, because the 1 3/8" Dual Disc is the same on a 4500 and a 5600. NOT SURE THOUGH.

first cummins i bought had come with a getrag. bob simerly (original owner) had ordered a 4500 from std trans (dallas tx) with all the goodies. paid a pretty penny for it too

after i bought the truck the nut for high gear fell off

when i pulled the trans apart (or almost all the way apart) was i ever surprised to see that it DID NOT have the upgraded main shaft kit that was on the invoice. it was a stock trans

bob did not install the trans himself. he had a shop in nevada do it. he did say that he saw the crate from std show up and he believed no one at the shop swapped trannies on him

take it for what its worth

cost me an extra grand

don

If I could launch in 3rd gear, the NV4500 would not be that bad for drag racing. The 3-4 shift is quick and if you don't lift the throttle, you only lose like 10 psi of boost.

Sometimes the 4-5 shift is a little slow, sometimes it was really quick so I think with a lot of practice the 4-5 shift could be perfected.

I don't care who you are, the 2-3 shift will never be lighting quick. It was pretty fast with a stock clutch and small friction plate but that won't hold up in a race truck.

I hear those D-max manual trannies shift quick and will hold quite a bit of power. Wonder what it would take to fit one of them?

how will one hold up sled pulling...im building a 97 pulling truck and im just gonna stick a dual disk clutch in it and go. anyone think it will survive?..what might go wrong with it?

full manual 47/48 RH... doneski

didnt know anyone made a full manual valve body for those

thought they were elec controlled by solenoids?

no?

does anyone make a brake for that trans?

(trans brake, apply's reverse band when activated)

if so i want one for my R/T

i'm working on a drag truck and going with a bread truck flywheel housing from a 4BT that used a turbo 400. a built turbo 400 is about 1/2 the price of the dodge trans and has seen lot's of abuse.

they make a manual valve body and a brake for that one

but i dont know how its gonna like the torque a cummins makes

yikes...

Thats sweet, I cant wait till you get this done I'm really curious as to how well it will hold up. I'd like to try that in my pulling truck if the NV4500 ever becomes to much of a hassle.
