NV5600 Rebuild. Any Lessons Learned?

The last truck that gave me crap was my '99 identical to this one with a 5 speed. I traded it for this one. Time to trade. :hehe:

IMO if you are having problems in all the gears you have a release issue, be it hydraulics or clutch. You can build the tranny yourself if you have a press that will go 10-15 tons and bearing splitters. If you dont have any gear damage all you should need is a bearing, synchro & seal kit. Third seems to always be the first synchro to go in 5spd & 6spd trannies in Dodge and Chevy. You CAN do it yourself, if you can put in the clutch, you can biuld this unit. I think you have more than just synchro issues though. Flushing the unit won't help I don't think, if one is bad, replace them all.

I have thought for awhile now that my clutch doesn't fully disengage. I had my tranny rebuilt back in Dec., but it's still hard to get into gear while sitting still and shifting into 3,4, and sometimes 5 is still a little rough. I found out that I could park my truck on an incline (engine off), leave it in gear and release the park break, and if I slooowly push in the clutch I can get it all the way to the floor and the truck won't roll. If I push the pedal in at the normal speed it will release. Don't know if that's normal or not....

Pressing the pedal slooooow maybe giving the hydraulics time to bleed off?

Well, I bought new fluid this morning to try. My major problem right now is the drivers side parking brake hung this weekend. I drove to Stillwater Sat night for a band gig and pulled up to white smoke boiling out from my duals. Really nice. Now I have the whole thing tore down. Rotors got resurfaced this morning (warped a tad due to heat) and all the parts and seals to rebuild tonight. When it rains...it freakin' pours! And A/C is leaking, no cold air.

my truck never shifted any better than when i used Redline MTL and one of the bottles of Dodge rear diff friction modifier, i recommend that to everyone who asks about the 5600. Maybe your fluid broke down pretty bad and caused the other issues, or like you said you have something in the clutch hanging up.

Thanks T.J. I had switched to Amsoil about 35K ago and wasn't impressed. I also added the recommended oz's of friction modifier and that didn't seem to help either. I bought the recommended specification fluid called "synchro mesh" in a yellow bottle today. I have always said I'd never run Penzoil even in my lawn mower, but I figure I'm gonna try it 'cause I'm probably gonna end up dumping it out and reworkin' the tranny anyway. :D

Jory, what were you running from amsoil? The 5w30 engine oil, or the MTF fluid? Ihave some MTF I was getting ready to put in.

I was expecting an improvement but couldn't feel any. I can't rag on the product because everything I can tell you is by "seat of pants" or "clutch foot" so to speak with no actual data or testing. But, it felt no different than the stock crysler $100 a pint bull crap. So, experiment at your own risk! :D

MTF, WTF??

I have soem MTF I guess I will run.

Can you give some history on the tranny, when did the synchronizers start giving you fits, etc?

Castrol makes the spec fluid.

OSU education at work! Still better than OU:D

History on tranny.

Completely detonated the syncs in REV at 34K miles, under warranty, repair completed by dealer $0.

Jumped horse power up to around 400 ponies at around the 85K mile mark and installed a South Bend Con OFE at the same time with stock hydraulics.

At around 90K 3rd syncs started giving me fits. Did a lot of research and everyone had their own opinions on Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. I picked and put in Amsoil. Then read about adding the limitied slip axle fluid what ever it is. I think it was something like 8oz or something. Added it. No change. I have been double clutchin' 3rd gear when cold for almost 20K miles. Once the tranny reaches 150F or higher on the attitude readout, the shifting improves dramatically and the double cluch is no longer needed for 3rd. Downshifting is a biatchch no matter what the temp and with a trailer on, skip 3rd on the way down. **insert sound of metal on metal grinding really loud**

In Amsoil's defense, the sync in 3 was hosed before the fluid, I was just hoping it would give me a noticable difference and it didn't. Not its fault. :D

Does that suffice? Wanna drive over and help me rebuild it? LOL

Thank you sir. I never did figure out why I ended up as an electrical engineer. I started out as a civil and for some reason changed. Everyone asked me why, as civil was so much easier. Said all you needed for civil engineering is

1. Can't push a rope
2. Poop flows down hill
3. If it moves it is broke

I think I will pass on the rebuild help, thanks for the offer. I have too much of my projects. The puller is still isnt back together.
