P-Pump or Monster/Dragon VP?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? I've got the Monster II right now, but something tells me it's on the way out. If this is the rate these new pumps are going to last I'm wondering if it's worth it to invest in installing a P-Pump for longevity. Aside from electronic timing on the VP what else am I losing going to a P-Pump?

That nagging feeling in the back of your mind wondering how long that VP is going to last...

Thats what I lost anyway...

I think the choice for anyone over 600hp thats wants it reliably is the P-Pump conversion.

Matters what you do with the truck. I wouldn't go P-pump on a DD, only because it isn't adjustable. The vp isn't reliable, but you have alot of choices. If you tune your truck right, a vp can make plenty of power & switch on the fly.

i just wish the monster/dragon flow would last 100K or so but i doubt that will happen even with proper fuel pressure and lubrication

after 3 vp's in 5 years the choice was clear......P PUMP, i bought a 12v for swap parts and ended up buildin it instead.

Get you a good 12mm pump at 450-500 cc's and drive it all day every day. Should have no worries of it going out. Get you some good injectors a 64 turbo and add a little water injection kit to it and you wil have a hell of a truck thats very reliable. Power all the time, good fuel mileage and all the smoke you will need for the street. Wait.... Never to much smoke.

Buddy of mine was scared about daily driving his p-pumped 01. Went for a ride in it this weekend and it's better mannered than mine. It is a little smokier around town but nothing major. It's faster than mine and his plate is barely pushed forward. I hate to say it but I'm considering doing this to mine.

after finding out how streetable my set-up is, i would feel very confident in taking another 24, putting a pump on it that is set for about 450cc's of fuel, with a properly tuned AFC and some 4k springs, and daily driving, and towing with it anywhere in the country. its all about getting the initial set-up done on it. throw a valet switch in and its now even more tame if you need it to be.

Another thing to consider is the cost of the swap vs the cost of a new VP. The p-pump conversion costs more than any of the VP options...granted if you go with a Monster or the new Dragon Fire (vs a stock VP), it will be closer to the cost of the p-pump conversion, but its still a tossup.

So he has about 150 RWHP then?

Ouch!

150.5 to be exact. LOL

j-rod, my buddy broke even on his swap and in fact may have made a little money on it by the time he sold his VP, quad, smarty, injectors, and other parts for it. He bought a complete 12v motor and ended up selling enough parts off of it as well to cover it. So really if it's done right you could actually break even on the swap.

I don't know enough about the P-pump. I'll do the swap in a minute if I could be sure it was towable & still put more power down above redline than my current setup. I've heard alot of horror stories from guys saying they can't control smoke, can't tow etc. I haven't seen many dyno graphs from P-pump trucks either. The ones I have seen are very impressive at peak hp, but not making much more power than my vp made above redline.

Ill stay with my VP for now! If i decide to do anything it will be to buy a 12V and make it a pulling truck and take my 01 back to stock (well not completely)

You've definitely got an odd ball that's for sure.

whats different about a modded 12v with a factory p pump and a 24v with a p pump? my 12v is streetable and it has way more hp than the majorty of the vp trucks.

Granted, I've never towed with my truck, but I can't see it being any worse. Smoke is absolutely controllable with the AFC, my EGT's are the same as it was with the VP (except at WOT, more fuel), and it drove better than my II HRVP did. When we did our dyno day, I did 450/900 with plate and GSK and gutted AFC (i think that hurt me) and a 62mm turbo, torque peak was around the 2500 rpm mark. The trucks running twins who were in the low 500 hp range had torquein the mid to high 800's. Was a Dynojet dyno.

If you can find a 12v to rob parts from, the only other thing you will need is the hi pressure lines and the cam sensor kit. Sell off the 12v parts and the 24v parts, and you could even come out ahead.
