Do you manually shift with the column mounted shifter or do you run some sort of ratchet shifter?

If so, what brand of ratchet shifter do you use or works the best?

(I'm assuming you don't let the truck shift itself) ???

I run a B&M mega truck shifter. There are other brands, but that one was reasonably priced and I have 2 years on it with no issues.

Manually shift it. I had it shifting at 3600 rpm, but that just isn't high enough for certain chargers.

Another thing is that manual 1 is stronger than just leaving it in 2nd or drive.

I was aware of reasons you would need to manually shift (like bigger chargers that need to maintains some rpms), just couldn't see someone trying to shift the column lever while bouncing down the track. Recipe for disaster...

Didn't know what guys were doing.

They must make longer handles for these things so you can reach it while seated, don't they typically mount on the floor?

Many people shift with the column shifter, usually it isn't an issue. I think I missed one shift in like 2 years. The floor shifter just makes it one less thing to worry about.

The truck mega shifter has a taller base. Also it is cable operated, so you can mount it anywhere the cable will allow you to reach.

its simple to make a pedestal to mount it on to bring it up to the level you need as long as the cable is long enough...

On the manual shift versus letting the truck shift deal, in one long phone conversation with Dave G, he told me that manually shifting a 47RH can cause it to shift so hard it will snap shafts, whereas a RE usually won't do that. This was for my personal truck, was only going to have a billet input and triple disc convertor. He had suggested that I put the shifter in 2, let it start out and shift, then lockup the converter in 2nd. Plans were for 400 or so rwhp, nothing too special.

Most of you guys are running full tilt autos, and definately more power and rpm, but I thought I'd share it with, in case other young guys like myself were trying to get into it.

I put a B&M Quick Silver in mine and made a pedestal to mount it to. The cable they send you with it is plenty long enough. I put my lock up on a full throttle switch so I dont ever even have to think about it and it locks in first gear. You will notice a big distance in your ft down the track if you can get her locked in first.

If you have a good auto, it will shift at the right time with no flaws

I manually shift with the column shifter...never skipped a gear but I did accidentally forget to turn OD off one time.

I won't totally agree with that, if your looking for 4500+ shifts the RE trannies can be a little different to setup.

It will be done next year, a 5000rpm+ truck with have a good auto will be out!

So you will put the lever in Drive and let this 5000+ rpm truck run and expect the RE to shift it at 5000 rpm?

You still loose the added strength when of running it in Manual 1.

Travis Theener's truck got rearended by the sled back in like 01-02 at hillsboro with someone else driving, it was caused by going up too many shifts and hit reverse i believe.....

put a reverse manual valve body in it so that way you shift down instead of up.....

I see that this is mainly a cummins thread, but my dad has been thinking of pulling his 07 classic dmax with the 6 speed alli, and I had this same question. With the "paddle" type shifter on the gear selector, would you run that? And how would you start out with it?

Mine is manual valve body but my shifter has reverse lock out so I dont have that problem:doh:

So if you lock it in first is it any harder on the shafts when it shifts?

I was told to not lock the tq up in first if thats what you are reffering to it will destroy it. I used to lock mine in 2nd but with a big charger on a tight track its hard to do unless you have tons of fuel/rpm
