Question for those that pull with an auto trans...

In this video You can hear the load getting put on the engine When I locked the converter. I put it in second with O/D off and it seems to work pretty well

what do you all have done to that truck? thats what i normally run my truck in 2nd O/d off

I have what I estimate to be a 350 hp truck with a Goerand trans. My mods are in my signature. I do not have a torque converter lockup switch. Would it be a worthwhile modification on my truck? If I do get one, from what I'm reading, I should lock it up once it gets moving good in 1st gear and leave it locked until I spin out? The only time I pulled my truck I just put it in drive and let it go. It shifted into drive at about 200ft. and I spun out at 228ft. I was thinking about keeping it in 2nd next time. Any thoughts or opinions?

I have a lockup switch in my 03 and when pulling it if I start in 2nd and let it shift automatically I cant get it to lock. but when I start in man 1 then shift and lock it up its fine. but I run manual 1st then shift about 50ft then lock it up right when it gets rpms in 2nd

I just started waiting till I get some speed up bout 100-125 ft and lock it then. It still throws the truck forward when I hit the switch.

Thats where I disagree with you Doug. I really believe slad pulls are won in the first 75 to 100 feet. I almost always have mine locked before 50 ft. If I come out of the whole spinning hard and in second by 30 ft it gets locked. You've seen me do that. In Dougs St Charles video mine was the gray 05 dodge.

Just an idea here but what if you locked the convertor manually the put the unlock on a hobbs switch to unlock it. When you fall off boost it would unlock automatically. Less chance to unlock to soon or to late.

Also Dusty told me too that if you lock it up in 1st gear chance are pretty good on busting the case. Also anytime I've let mine go into overdrive it usually tears it out. That was before the BD O/D lockout kit.

I agree to an extent but there has to be a combition of a good take off and knowing when to unlock @
If you watch Brandon @ 3:23 he won this pull partly because he new when to unlock his tq. He gained another 40' or so unlocked

Any links or 'how to's' on wiring a torque converter lock switch? Is there a kit that would make it simple?

Does anyone run in 3rd locked? Also how important is traction bars? Pros and cons. Understand axlewrap but does the housing lift that hig to cause a bad angle on the u-joint? Just trying to learn so I don tear to much up.

Always run 3rd gear locked up, we usually run 26 mph track speed up to 30 on a light sled blowing tires off the whole way but you have to watch them light sleds that slam you reall hard in the end. If you don't unlock convertor in time you'll fall under charger.

Yes Ron I know how you do it I will try it this saturday when we meet up again. You know that was the frist couple hooks with the switch and still learning the right times.

blownsmoke2 do you unlock right before it start to spins down or is there a rule of thumd at a certain mph to unlock at? Thanks btw for the info.

I see that this is mainly a cummins thread, but my dad has been thinking of pulling his 07 classic dmax with the 6 speed alli, and I had this same question. With the "paddle" type shifter on the gear selector, would you run that? And how would you start out with it?

I run my 06 lbz in M and tap it up to 3rd when I tighten the chain and let'er eat. T/h mode also. I've got the Turbobrake for my lockup. It will shift itself better than I could ever think about hitting that little paddle button.
Here's a vid from inside the cab and you can hear it shift.

Kinda got to get a feel for it. When the sled starts to pull you down and gets real heavy you need to unlock it.

Got it. BTW I'm assuming you have traction bars. What size, shape, and thickness of metal do you use? I would like to build my own as it would be cheaper and I believe I have a good design already drawn up. Plus I like to do it myself for the learning experience.
