Retorque Factory Head Bolts

I guess all these folks on this side of the country that are hauling ass and making big power without studs must be running on false hope...

or low compression? I don't know... You're welcome to retorque your bolts. I'll just buy some fasteners designed for it.

what do you think the numbers are on guys with stock bolts vs. studs holding more power?

Depends on who it is.... Keating, Darren, and Garmon seem to have it figured out pretty well....

Just for the record... when I did my injector install I had a Snap-on torque wrench.. set to 100lbs checked several bolts... wrench just snapped... continued in 5lb increments to 115... same thing...

So I left them alone... for some reason my HE351 is only tapping 40lbs of boost then settling on 36lbs (give or take) at WOT.?.?.

Also for the record... I hate the Edge Jammers 5..... they smoke pretty bad with my edge comp off :bang

Search stock head bolts... you will get all sorts of info...

FWIW, Garmon got mine to 155 2 or 3 years ago, and I have been pushing 50-60ish pounds of boost ever since.

I've been running ~50 psi on my 89 and i never touched the head bolts.... towed cross country many times. My 02 runs about 45 psi on stock head bolts with no retourque.... i think its a false sense of security.

You can run 70 psi if you don't make any power and you wont lift a head....

so the average enthusiast working on his own truck has the choice of buying a set of studs that can be re-used many times as long as they're not overtorqued OR... shipping his truck halfway across the country to one of three guys so that they can sacrifice a Georgia mud goat at midnight and dip the headbolts in the blood?

yeah, I'll take option A

YMMV

Or you could call them and they can tell you how to do it...

I believe that if you have a virgin head gasket, and you are not going to run more than 55 psi, and are under 650 hp, you can run stock studs. But I wouldnt touch them. If you are going to tork them up, I would go and buy a set of studs and do it right,, no sense in doing things twice

Just because forest said its not possible doesn't make him the know it all. It's very possible to retorqe head bolts do it all the time have never had one break. You need a good torque wrench to do it though. We run head bolts in my pro truck and the Mamba both make over 120 psi of boost and are not low compression. But if studs make you feel better get u some.

Goat blood at midnight? I thought that was for delivery valve spring treatment? For the head bolt re-torques we've always used vagina juice from a white-tailed deer under the zodiac sign of the goat. Maybe that's where Forest got confused ???

Hey Jeff, Is That Vagina Juice all natural or made from concentrate?
