bent a rod in my truck and working on getting some used ones or new ones can a guy use rods from a common rail in my 01 vp44 truck? and there prolly the same from 12vavles right?

There are actually three different versions of 5.9 connecting rods.
Your best bet is to stick with 12V & 24V. CR are not a good choice for an upgrade.

VP rods are supposed to be the strongest of the three OEM rods. How did you bend a rod, hydro-lock?

the CR rods are powderized steel rods where the VP rods are not.

The Cummins CR, cracked cap rod is not powdered metal like the DMAX.

Its a C70 microalloy, forged steel that is crackable. The cracked joint is the strongest of all the factory designs.

They both use an 11mm fastener. The cracked cap will hold itself together easier in the cap area VS the machined rod.

In 2002, all the rods were tested...the cracked cap rod was the strongest in the tests performed. I have cracked cap rods in my 12 valve engine. No failures yet.

All that being said, Reb respectfully disagrees with me. He has bustamacated up more parts than I might ever. Not all his failures have been with the 6.7 either. He called me 2 days before Christmas and told me about the crankshaft he broke in his 03 we tuned to 1290 HP plus. BTW, that same engine that busted the crank..all connecting rods ( not the cracked cap style ) lived through that and are usable again.

So lab testing is great and fine and I still trust it, but it is hard to discount Rebs success with the old school rods.

bolded for truth.

can we start another rod thread like the one bbd started it turned out so good.

back on topic i would with out a doubt stay with the older rods just not the ones from japan.

well i guess i was miss informed thanks for educating the masses brandon.

now get your ass to numidia!!

this is why this place rocks always learn something new

i can get a hold of rods from a vp44 motor and it burnt up number 3 is shouldnt of hurt that rod at all then right?

Truth is C70 or powdered metal doesnt matter. Good luck trying to find useful data on C70. Just because it has it has a fancy name it does really mean anything. If the alloy is of a make up that supports the cap cracking method it will not be robust enough for a performace diesel rod.

Ever wonder why 4340 rods dont come with cracked caps? Because you would have a bent up mess as that alloy will not fail in a manner that would leave useful parts.

Just the truth.

Rod ID

Here is a pic that shows the visual differences between the rod generations
A.
The picture to the far left is the Early 12V with larger rod bolts and a counter weight on the cap.
B.
Center pic is the 24V and later 12V
C.
Fracture split rod. These rods are laser etched then fractured to form an excellent contact between cap and rod. These rods don't like high cylinder pressures.

Looking at the side profiles, it looks like the middle rod has more meat.

The rods that came out of the 95 12v I bought and the rods that came out of my 99 24v look identical and look like the far left picture. My 12v rods are Brazil and the 24v are England.

my mexicans that came out of my 01' HO look just like the first pic. somewhat hard to tell in these pics but you get the idea. come on jeff you can do better than that. LOL..

The mexicans out of my '00 engine are the ones on the far left.
