the great hitch debate

Would you believe they build them just because they had some steel laying around and wanted to show off their welding skills?

what about hooking a chain around the gooseneck ball and have a bar come up on the rear hitch and hook it to that so it cant pull it down is that illegal i saw someone do that once awhile ago havent seen it ever agian

I agree with Gene, if you can put a ball in it and pull a trailer with it and the reciever and all braces are behind the rear axle then it is ok. The one in the picture you could not pull a trailer with. The second you hit the brakes that hitch will move right up. Also don't most rules say that the hitch must be rigid in all directions?

That hitch wouldnt fly down here , and the ball and chain are a no go to at most any sanction event, but I'v seen guys gain 10 +ft with the ball and chain, yes the trick or (real sled pulling hitch) as I see it work also. Havent you guys looked at most NTPA trucks they all have something like that buddy of mine has a 2wd and his goes to the back of the cab . If it says reece style then thats how I see it they bolt in the back frame rails near or under the bumper but I also agree on some kind of support

anybody got any good pics of the sled pulling hitches

Here's my pulling hitch. I have been told for some reason that it will be illegal. Even though it is a reese style, 2.5 inch reciever which would make it a class 5 hitch.

I think thats what everybody is sayin. Its gotta have a receiver. I cant see why unless it was for safety though.

Who told you it was illegal? Looks ok to me.

My guess would be no slide in reciever. Can't change to a ball and tow a trailor. With the increases in power for all the classes I think your going to see the tech start getting tougher.

Jerrod's hitch is a receiver style hitch. You can take the hitch out and put in a ball or pintle hitch and pull a trailer with it, so I don't see why it wouldn't be legal.
The only thing I can think of to why it would not be is that there is no rear bumper or roll pan, but that shouldn't really matter.

I am wandering how the rules read. If they say not point in front of the rear axle I would say put some pins on top of the bar so it can move up and call it legal. If it says hitch points must be behind the rear axle. Strike 1. Also could be how the plate is installed. If it has a plate that goes in from of the axle to mount the 5th wheel I can see an issue.

Did he give you any reason behind it?

He said it has to mount to the bottom of the frame rails and all reinforcements have to be within the hitch. Meaing no bars or braces running to something besides the hitch. I don't have any reinforcements running to anything besides the hitch so that's fine. But mine mounts between the frame rails so it's "ILLEGAL". Personally till I hear it from an official during tech, I'm gonna run it. Right now by reading the rules my setup meets all the of them.

And my hitch is a reciever style hitch, I have pulled a trailer with it, just slide out the pulling hitch and slide in the regular old drop down with a ball on it.

Mine is braced and has passed DHRA and others for three or four years.

Lord LBZ himself huh?:hehe:

Looks fine to me Jneal. A insert can be slid into it. The only rule I can think that actually violates is Wideopenpulling's hitch rule. "11. Factory or commercially distributed aftermarket hitch. Must be horizontal to the ground and stationary in all directions." Other words no homemade hitchs.

I think we should all be able to run a NTPA LEGAL HITCH

I have to agree with that. However none of the hitches in this thread will pass NTPA tech. the minimum pin cross section for them is 7/8" and your hitch must have 2 square inches of cross section in the entire hitch.
