Timing keeps slipping!!

Ok, been doing alot of work to my truck here lately. Got my injectors, head studs, 4k gov springs, 60lb valve springs, killed the kdp and set timing to 18.5. After everything was said and dun I take the truck for a drive, check the torque on the head studs and repeart that process a couple of times. Ok so everything is running good after several miles of testing it's time to see what she'll do and the first time she went over 3500 rpm the timing slipped back! So reset timing again, torque to cummins spec plus a little extra, made sure inside of gear and pump shaft is super SUPER clean. Next test drive resulted in the same thing, rpm over 3500 and the timing slips. And then again the same thing!!! WTF :bang
Any help from you guys is greatly appreciated!! Is there any way to get the gear to grip a little better or what do yal think?!

New washer, 160-170 ft-lbs, pleanty of brake clean. I had an issue just like this and a new washer and nut (probably just washer was enough) solved it for me.

Those adjustable gears work wonders. They cost alot less than a camshaft replacement after stripping the thread, and hold well without turning your pump into a core.

Making sure it is all clean, using a new lock washer, and taking the torque to 165 ft lbs usually worked for me.

x2. Love my adjustable gear, only downside is a modded cover is also required.

With a clean taper and 180 ft-lbs, I've never had on slip. A not so clean taper, it slipped just as the turbo was gonna hit hard and the tires typically let go. Instead it just sputtered and died. Very anti-climatic.

144lbs and about a can of ether lol never had only had one slip and it was my fault obviously because it slipped at immediate start up.

Thanks everyone of the info. Just ordered gear, nut and washer to eliminate any doubts! I really like the adjustable gear and have been looking at it for a while but after studs and everything else can't afford the adjustable gear and cover right now. Hopefully the new gear, nut and washer will hold her in time.

You could try welding the pump gear to the pump shaft, it definitely wouldn't slip unless the welds broke!

I think I paid 150 or 200 IIRC. Been way to long...

eat soots are about 180 IIRC your own kit can be made tho. I've heard a spare drain plug has the same thread as the dv adapter so that can be adapted. Then if you buy a cheap dial indicator from somewhere ($10 at harbor freight) with an extender $2-$5(search online) and then a $40 dv socket your set. I plan to make my own this summer.
