Unlim Single 3.2" Twin Drivetrain Question

jeremy, are those 16x6? pr are they wider??? Seems some of the trucks are running 17" wheels that appear to be at least 8" wide. Their tires look like the treads are pretty flat. A couple in particular that I remember looking at TS was the Ridin Dirty duramax truck and Josh Mosley's truck. IIRC, both of their duals seemed to be wider than standard dually wheels. I'm pretty sure Josh's is.was still D80 but I'm thinking the Ridin Dirty truck has a big rearend under it?? I focused more on eyeball raping his Dodge D60 under the front than I did the rear. LOL

Yes they are 16x6 but they can be widened or cut the center of the wheels out were they attach to the rim and find some blank rims that have no centers and weld the 6 lug center in them so its possible to build a 10-12 wide wheel pretty cheap

Can you have to wide of a contact area (to wide of duals) in the rear?
Thanks for the info on the rims guys!!!

I have asked myself that same question a thousand times. My conclusion, depends on the track. I run 285 on my truck which are narrower with a smaller foot print then say a 315. On a loose track i will get beat pretty bad by a truck with a wider tire but on a hard power track i tend to do the beating. My thoery and only my opininon is that my tires on a loose track has to much down force for no wider then my tires are(square inch of contact surface times the lbs exerted on the tires) causing the tire to dig deeper in the track Verse a tire that has more contact area which would reduce the pounds per square inch over the face of the tire allowing it to float. On a hard track this works in my favor because the wider tire still floats but it a different surface and allows for more force to be applied before the tire starts to sink$.02

What brand or type of tire are they using on the rear? The last time I pulled was 2 yrs ago and I was runing single STS's all around

So can these be used in their stock width or do they all have to be narrowed????
Brandon
Will work at the stock length
Gear sets were about the same as the 106s, but I did find that you can get the H172s with 4.88s. The lowest numerical ratios I have seen are 4.88, 5.3x, 5.8x, and 6.20. Would be nice if 5.13 or close to that was available.

I found a spec for the axle length, but no overall dimensions of the assembly.
About the same as a F106, with in a few inches
A stock H172 is a heavy pig. I would think it needs to be narrowed and lightened up some to be useful. I have one that you can come measure if you like Brandon.
A 172 is a pig and will work in stock form with out having to be shortened but in the case that you break it, the ring and pinion is $1400. I would recommend the F106 or SQHD because the R&R are about $300 to replace them.
If somebody would like a 172 i have one here i may be willing to part with it has 6.20 in it
Are those stock 106s or ones with SCS guts in them?

Do guys leave the 172s stock or no?

In the 106 the ring and pinion gives up in them, theres no real fix other then ring gear and pinion support and they still break

Sure alot of people are running them, not the tire for me but a few are having alot of good luck with them they seem to inconsistant for me. They work well on some tracks and suck on others but they have there tracks and regions.

Thought that was before the indoor pull after he crinkled his bed all to hell?

Brad replaced the bed before he sold it. It was always a short bed when he had it. Jeff ran it at a few pulls with the short bed, and then we took a week and made it the long bed dually it is now, and added a weight box.

Anyhow back to the 80 question, running an unlimited single out here with the 80 he got about 4 runs until it hooked good at the end once. It ripped teeth off the ring in the 80, and the front 60. New gears and a tensioner brace for the rear housing not to separate and it has been fine since, but we did a r&p change front and rear just to be safe. Never had a problem with the axles, they are from Haisley front and rear.

any info on this tensioner brace would be be great! not quite sure what you are refering too

Ryan

We welded two pieces of 1/2" plate about 4"X4" to the housing on either side of the diff cover. Then we took a ratchet binder off the trailer hooked it between the two and tightened it until we couldn't anymore then tied the handle up out of the way. Works so far and the includes going to a big twin set.

Sorry I'm dumb, does the brace keep the housing from spreading? Any pics?
