vgt exhaust brake control

i picked up a wastegate actuator today, its off a 7.3 and seems to move with low pressure, im going to get shop air on it tomorrow and see how much psi it take to move it, i think it will work pretty well in my set up, it was free so i had to take it

Free is best. Good luck with it. One thing I would do different is the adapter. It is tight in there and is close to shock tower. Theres one on you tube its a 1st gen. He made a adapter that made a 45 degree angle so it sits lower and closer to the engine. And if you did it right you could use your intercooler pipe instead of making one. If I find a pic of it ill post it.

i was actually thinking of flipping the manifold over and mounting it high so i could hang something under it one day, also my truck is a 95 which had problems with the 4x4 coil perches ripping off the frame, one of mine started to do this on a road trip, so i cut them both off and lowered them down a 1-1/14 so the tops of my shock tower sit about an inch lower than yours, i gained a 1-1/4 of lift by doing this

Didn't know this a pic would be good to see.

On a 2nd gen with ~1" spacer between the manifold and turbo the turbine housing is too close to the rubber hood seal/firewall insulation to run the manifold flipped. I tried.

i saw that on some videos i saw with these turbos on 2nd gens, thought about possibly making the adapter with at a downward sorta angle to it so the turbo moves up and over but wont sit as high as it would if i took it straight up off the manifold

as for the tower brackets i will try and get some pics up, if you look at a 96 or newer the brackets are alot bigger than the 95s and they wrap around the frame, there is a factory recall on the 94 and 95 trucks for this

To be honest with you, I generally try to steer people away from the swap. I'd be much happier if I had saved my time and money for a decent 64mm turbo..

a 64mm wont happen for awhile with my current situation, im know there are alot of better options out there for more money that im sure i would be happier with but got make do with what you got right?

as for my bracket braking i would attribute alot of the stress for that breakage on the fact that my truck has been air born a few times and that weekend it broke me and my friend were romping the crap out of my truck

I believe the guy that was in the video used a motor off a power window to opperate the exhaust brake. Ive read til my eyes are bleeding on these vgts

haha thats what i have been doing and then the wife gets mad at me for being on the computer so much

what size is the compressor out let on these things? is it 3" or 2.5"? im hopefully going to pick up my turbo tonight but i cant wait to find out the size i want to get all my parts ordered up so i can roll on this project soon

i played around with my free 7.3 wastegate and it seems to start moving a bit over 10psi and then it opens pretty steadily form there

The wheel is a 60mm but the flange for the downpipe is smaller than the Hx40 I think lol. Some people use the hx40 downpipe for it

just picked it up, i was looking for the size of the out let part that you hook up to the intercooler pipe, i measured it and its smaller than 3" od but it looks like a 2.75 boot might be a tight fit, what do you guys use for this?

I wonder if all 3rd gen compressor housing are 2.75 if so you could go to a junk yard.

i have been combing over this one yard and every diesel that comes in gets the motor and tranny removed before it even hits the lot, whats up with that? a 5500 just came in and they took the motor, trans and rear axle out before they put in on the lot

is there a silencer ring in these turbos? looks to me like there is something there resembling a ring but it looks like its held in by pins

You will have to drill the pins but the aluminum probably won't let you. I would take a drimel and put a cutting blade on there and cut where the pins are. I would run it with the ring first it whistles loud on mine.

I just thought of another thing to help u out. When ever you weld a arm on the gear piece for your actuator. There's a Allen head bolt it the oil drain if you loosen it you can rotate the gear so you can have more surface area to weld the arm on that's what I did. Another guy in my town just welded his to the top the gear were its mated to the shaft and his broke and caused the collar inside to break or vice versa.
