What to build? 2.8 or Super Street?

I've got a 95 regular cab dually that I want to build a pulling truck out of. I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to build a driveable 2.8 truck or just go ahead and build a Super Street class truck with a solid rear suspension. I don't have to have this truck for anything practical, so it really just depends on my budget and motivation. I'm leaning torwards starting out with a 2.8 truck and then move into the Super Street class later. I've already got the bed off, engine and tranny out and getting ready to paint the truck. What would you do?

Super Street!! Do it once not twice. 2.8 seems to break a lot and if you build it so that nothing will break in the stock driveline you would be money ahead to just build for the super street class. Good luck with the build.

Yeah, I think deep down inside that's what I want to do anyway. Now I just need to find the motivation and a good starting point. I guess I just need to start buying parts and go from there. Thanks for the input!

i agree with bubba. super street and dont look back. racingjunk.com is always a good place to look for parts.

So is it worth building the stock driveline to handle the abuse, or do I fork out the cash for a drop box, reverser and a 106? Where is a good place to start?

While I agree with the notion that its cheaper to build it once but I would also look at what class has hooks in your area. No point in building a truck that you can't hook locally.

NSPA has a street diesel class that has the same basic rules as the 2.8 class and also has a Super Street class. I'd like to try to run in the Super Street class and compete against Jeff Broady and Clint Cannon. Jeff bought Brad Ingram's old truck and ran it all last year with a stock driveline. He blew up a few sets of gears but other than that he did pretty damn good.

If you have the funds build it super street and dont look back. You say you have a class to run so thats what i would do.

Ok...Super Street it is. We'll see about the funds. I obviously would like to build it as inexpensive as possible. I checked out racingjunk.com but didnt find too much as far as drivetrain. There was a few nice trucks for sale. Probably cheaper to buy one rather than build one. Are there any other avenues for good used components? What all has to be done to a 106 to get it set up right?

106 can be run in stock form and all you have to do is weld the spiders. You can sell the stock trans and transfer case and buy a new drop box and reverser for about $1500 difference. If you can find them used would be close to the same money. Much easier to do it once and would recommend Super Street all the way best thing i did was put in the open diveline.

What about hubs and axles? Does someone build hubs that you can bolt a Dodge wheel to Or do I need different wheels? Are the stock 106 axles strong enough? I've seen spools and axles from scs but have no idea of cost.

I run Isuzu box truck 6 lug wheels. They do make 8 lug hubs. They are aluminum, will run $900 a pair, stock axles will hold what you will be making hp wise and so will the welded carrier dont see a need to spend all the $$$$ for the SCS stuff untill you put Cepecks on

My feeling is this. Either one is a GREAT class. If you want to be competitive in either. Its going to take some money. Save your money on painting the truck and put it to some good quality parts. I love to have something that looks great. I don't know your financial situation. But the money you put into making it looking good can get you some very good parts to make it run good instead. Good luck in whatever you do. Hope to see it out soon.

Thanks for the advice. Didn't I see the truck in your avatar for sale on racingjunk.com?

What front axle are you using?

Past 2 year (07-08) stock D60 with stock axles and a locker. Only broke 1 short side axle and that happened when i broke the ring and pinion in the 106. This (09) year D60 with 35 spline Moser axles and a locker because i was planing on running cepecks some this summer but that didnt happen shooting for cepecks some in 2010

Are the gears pretty easy to find for the rockwell to match up with your front axle? Do you run a lot lower gear in the axles if you use a drop box? Sorry for all the questions. Gotta ask somebody...
