11/32 valves as in Ford 351windsor style lol - piece of cake and very cheap to do - how big of a valve do you want - the cylinder wall is shroudin em bad as it is - so big as you can get isnt always a good thing
12 lbs of material - not unless your includin the weight of the removed intake
some of ZZ's pricing is high, others are low - so it balances out

I do my own head port work - I leave the machine work to the people with the expensive equipment but tell them what I want done.

Its not hard to spend $3000 or so by the time your done but is the best investment you will make on one of these motors

Phillip palmer in cairo GA that drives the Green stuckey dodge Does first rate work at his machine shop. don't have the number on me but if you need it I
can get it for you

I have seen a lot more then 12lbs removed at PDR when Farrell was running the head program, and the Piers was still the P in PDR.

Last time I was at Greg's he did the p/p himself, it definately was pretty! That was at the first of this year and I'm sure he has only become busier.

If your removing the plenum for improving the air flow to 1 and 6, the stock plenum will weight slightly more than 12lbs.

I love how shops quote saying they removed x amount of material during the port job..... Take a step back from that razzle dazzle sales tactic:bang me thinks water will soon see the intake tract. Several big dollar heads have met this demise, costing big dollars- it doesnt seem worth it if they crack when pushed. What do you expect with a cast iron casting during a pushed heat cycle? If you are going to the limits with the stock casting, be prepared to venture into internal port thermal barrier coatings......

I am also laughing at the 8 hours- I have that in "final buff work" alone:rockwoot:

Maybe I should put a stopwatch next to the bench when I start on the next one:bang

Last time i talked to Greg he said he spent an average of 40 on a CR head iirc. Wish I had let him do mine.

A different option

I had mine done at Extrude Hone. A few have seen it and it is super slick. I'd bet it is slicker than Teflon. They have it hooked to a flow bench and can match all the Intake and Exhaust runners and it is done throughout and not as far as someone can reach. You have to put new valve seats,.. but that wasn't expensive. All in all,.. I have been very pleased with that mod. At the time I also had the Intake and Exhaust manifold both done. IMO, it would be hard to beat.

A lot of NHRA guys use that process, fyi.

Just another option for you.

Did you have it ported and then extrude honed or just extrude honed?

I have also heard good things about this process with the tractor guys.

What did they charge? PM if necessary.

I'm surprised someone hasn't contacted a cnc porting company. Once you get it done by hand they could digitize and and provide it to the masses. Much more accurate than hand. I'm betting it would have to be done on a new head though that hasn't been heat cycled.

Can't you just get a hole-saw and drill a hole connecting the exhaust port to the intake?

:D

the Duramax guys have that luxury, Cummins guys, that I am aware of, don't

FYI, the 12lbs of material removed was done while retaining the stock intake plenum. Im sure theres much more that can be done when that is removed. The next head we take him will be one that we remove the stock plenum and fab our own.

head porting

the best would be raymac or zzfab or search out darrin morgan @ profiler cyl. heads. he used to work at reher morrison as thier head guy. all three are some of the best. i'm sure there are others just haven't had any experience but with these 3.

for the right price darrin will make you a head. at profiler they cast their own heads and he has a workup of a 24v from when he done mine.
when they come out of the mold they are as close to glass smooth as you get from a head. some of the best gasser heads come out of that facility.

Never done business with raymac but have heard too many bad things to even think about it. If I were to do it again I would go with Greg at ZZ, Mike at LazarSmith, and RD's pictures look top notch!

My q about extrude hone is how do they do it? If they pass an abrasive material through it how do they control where they are removing material?

I think that is just a process for polishing to be done after porting.
