Why no aftermarket VGTs???

Just curious why someone hasnt produced an aftermarket Variable Geometry Turbo for the performance crowd? I know ATS was working on the "MST" but never really saw anything from it. Just seems to me that someone would have done it by now. Maybe somethin like a 71mm VGT. That way you could have the best of both worlds. Big air, and good spooling.

I just read that supposedly Garret has one for the Dmax crowd...and Fleece is selling "Cheetah"s for us as well. I'm sure you're probably looking for a Dodge turbo, but that I don't know of. Although Extreme 4x4 did an episode of a Banks Dodge that had a "shapeshifter" VGT on it. But never heard about it again after that. I also think that most VGT's are computer controlled, so the issue might be dialing in the air tuning to match the fuel tuning, and that might be hard to mass produce. I think GM is the best candidates right now for this platform due the tuneability of EFI live. That technology already exists to support aftermarket VGT's. Also, I'm not sure if VGT would have enough affect in the competition world to make it a sure fire market.

Elite has 3 different VGT's for the 6.0 fords. a stock sized one with improved reliability, and 2 upgraded ones. VGT-SS and VGT-HO

DJ's has a VGT-SS and a VGT-MEGA for 6.0 Fords. Will have to wait till they open back up for specs and availability.

pretty sure 'dj's vgt-ss' is the elite vgt-ss

They sell/sold that one too. From what I understand, they have have one of their own they sell and the MEGA is theirs.

We have 3 options as well currently. 64mm comp wheel upgrade for Powerstroke & Duramax.

Turbine upgrade and 64mm comp wheel
Turbine upgrade and 70mm comp wheel

We're working on a variable GT42R currently that looks very very promising.

FYI the 64mm Cheetah with the upgraded turbine put down 596/1081 on tuning & turbo alone.

Here's the video of it starting up on a 2006 LBZ

Here's a dyno pull on the same truck.

I think this truck will be @ the 2008 SC Dyno Day.

Man that start up vid is SAWWWEEEEETTT!!! That sounds awesome. Im assuming all these turbos are for the Dmax applications only though?

Dmax and Powerstroke turbos are built off the same cartridge. I can build you that for a 6.0L if you want.. Or bigger ;)

Banks had one on a Cummins when I stopped and visited. Not for sale.

I've got a VNT GT45 I'm playing with. Off-the-shelf.

Yup, Garrett will release a VNT for the Dmax this summer, and Brayden has modified ones on the shelf today.

I think a 66mm or bigger VGT could be made to spool great, and be streetable, and still spool good. Id love to have a VGT turbo to play with on my truck. I really dont see why it would be all that hard to make work by just moddifying off the shelf turbos.

What about a varible gate like a Holset? Same principal just a different design, better maybe.

I think the holsets would work if you could get a smaller exhaust housing. Like the variable hx60 on the isx's has a 32cm housing on it.

What perimeters would you need to run a VGT? I have seen and once ran one on a 60 series Detroit.

The Mercedes guys will run them on their cars farily often, but IIRC the most common way to control the vanes is by oil PSI, there are also some aftermarket and home built electronic controllers out there.

Our turbobrake had a VGT running on a dodge a few weeks ago at a certain shop ;)
