Gary, Pro99 is one of the ALL-AROUND smartest people on this board that has extensive background on what works and what doesn't.
Anyhow both of you can we get back to subject at hand, it's more interresting that way!!!!!

I wasn't questioning use/conversion of 24 valve engines to the P-pump in trucks used primarily in competition events - what I *did* say was:

but I have yet to see a report on one used in a wide variety of uses - RV towing, grocery getter and such. Pretty hard to beat the OVERALL efficiency and performance of the later computerized fuel systems!
Then all Hell broke loose...
As an example, my own moderately modded '02 gets over 22 MPG in empty, mixed mountain/flatlands driving, yet still gets over 17 mpg towing our 24 foot 5er at a GCWR just over 14,000 lbs - in the exact same mixed driving. It does that while having the capability of well over 400 HP and nearly 1000 ft lbs torque. And yes - those MPG figures are hand calculated!
Again, pretty hard to beat the wide-range capabilities of the modern computerized diesel engines, as compared to the older purely mechanical ones!
What sort of daily driving performance in terms of BOTH power and economy could I expect from the same truck switched to a P-pump?
Like I said, I haven't seen ANY claims or figures related to "improvements" obtained in that wide variety of driving with a P-pumped truck, and THAT was my point!
This is sorta pertinent, because some readers of threads like this, perhaps unhappy due to a VP-44 failure, hear about P-pump swaps, and immediately start plans for their own install, unaware of any potential downsides from such a swap.
If you remove a VP-44 or HPCR setup to swap in a P-pump, how legal is it in terms of emissions, after all, inability of the p-pumped trucks to meet later emissions standards was WHY they ceased to be used - more and more states are beginning emissions testing for diesels - will a P-pumped 24 valve engine pass an emissions test - or still be highway legal in all states? Also, when it comes time to trade, is the converted truck then an orphan that no one other than a competition-only buyer would consider buying - would most dealers even want one on their lots, or a service department want to touch due to the mods made? No issue with the guy doing the mod perhaps - but what about when trade-in time rolls around?
These are reasonable considerations that should be considered BEFORE the parts start flying!
I wasn't trying to start a rhubarb, nor was I expecting or ACCEPTING a deliberate abusive off-topic personal attack because of my comments and views - but some countering FACTS related to my statements WOULD be of interest - especially to guys thinking the P-pump conversion is a total win/win setup in virtually ALL categories of normal usage.
And finally, as to which viewpoints are valid and worth discussion, if only opinions from guys with direct hands on and detailed experience are to be considered worth consideration in threads like this, about 90% of us had just as well pack up and LEAVE, because DISCUSSION over a wide variety of subjects and issues - MANY of which most guys have never touched or been involved in, are exactly what boards like this are about!
I don't have to be a concert pianist to recognize a sour note when I hear one, and honestly, I don't have to actually TASTE dog crap to KNOW I probably wouldn't like it...
NOR must I actually HAVE a P-pumped 24 valve engine under my hood to have and present legitimate and appropriate questions and concerns about some elements of the swap...
NOW, if any want to calmly discuss my above statements and opinions - and perhaps counter them with their own in a non-personal, confrontational or abusive manner, have at it - but leave the off-topic, juvenile schoolyard verbal personal abuse IN the schoolyard...
NOW, let's start over again...:thumbsup
