Superduty P-pump 24v cummins build thread

Hey Matt- I see you used the industrial manifold that puts the turbo down below. Did you use studs or bolts to attach the turbo? I've got an s300 and that last bolt in the back closest to the block is nearly impossible to get in.

I just used a stock 3rd gen manifold so bolts on the front two of the flange and studs on the two rear ones. It was a pain to get those I just had to use a wrench and a lot of patience

Hawker,
I have an industrial manifold and I did use bolts for the turbo. But I installed my turbo to the manifold first then put the manifold on the motor. used the shop crane to help hold it up.

Yeah... I gave in and dropped the turbo, threw 2 studs in it and bolts and nuts in the other.

Just a quick update:

Got about 600 miles on the truck now, did the first oil change and re tightened all the bolts on the engine. I also pulled the vacuum pump/ powersteering pump off and resealed it becuase it was leaking pretty bad

Then today I started tuning the pump becuase I couldnt take it being so slow any more. I modded the AFC for full travel, adjusted the starwheel for full fuel at 40psi of boost and cut the fuel plate to a #100 and set it at full forward. Took it out for a test drive and made a huge difference. Pulls a whole lot harder now and went from hitting 35psi max to 50psi now. And itll do burnouts now LOL

The big downside is it gets hot quick, at 50 psi it has the 1600 degree pyro pegged and its wayyyy to smoky under no boost going from a dead stop or cruising so I think tomorrow Ill start by backing off the preboost screw and then maybe moving the fuel plate to the middle and possibly bump timing to 24*. Just needs more tuning but its making progress

Good to hear. I can't believe you waited 600 miles to turn it up.

I will be fooling with that this week end. I would like to be able to do burn outs, heck if I could break the tires loose on gravel I would be pleased.

haha yeah I wanted to get break in miles over with before I started messing with it a lot. It sucked cause it was a massive turd. Its amazing what a difference a different washer, some cutting and grinding and a little turning of a wheel can make power wise on a p pump. The truck runs pretty dam good now. Im amazed how quick this 66 comes on boost and gets up to 50. Its wayy different from my old fummins with a 66.

Im gonna need to find a metal end tank 7.3 intercooler before I blow this 6.0 one out. Im gonna push my fuel plate back a little today too to try and take care of the haze while cruising and high egts.

Beautiful truck and nice work on the swap! Very clean looking under the hood!

I honesty think its the manifold that brings it all together, puts the turbo out of sight, keeps the engine bay looking modern. Went the same rout with my dads truck.

Thanks I appreciate it!

How is it with that turbo under normal around town driving?

Its great, I love this turbo, I thought it would be laggy like the 66 I had on my old fummins but its really not. If I lay into hard from a dead stop then yeah its thick smoke til it lites. Normal driving around town though it lights just fine and once its at 10psi I can lay into it and it jumps to 45 or so real quick. I do have a light haze driving but thats just more pump tuning I need to do, I still havent adjusted the pre boost screw.

wow thats a sharp looking truck!

Thank You!

Yeah the manifold definitely helps, Im glad I didnt go with the 2nd gen like I had originally planned

I think it’s the little coolant reservoir that sets it off. That engine bay looks like mine, only better. This is before I cleaned up the wiring.

Yeah, mine looks like a clusterf...k right now. I gotta try and straighten things up. My next move is one of those degas bottles.

Yeah the little reservoir is nice, I still have some more things to do under the hood though to clean it up more and finish it up I just havent had time lately
