Anyone done the coil over converion?

All you guys are a trip... :hehe: Well, now I defintely have some info to go by. Is this system able to work with a Hydro Assist steering system and crossover steering setup? Sorry for all the :blahblah1: :blahblah1: but trying to learn from people who know. :Cheer:

Crossover steering will work fine.
For the trac bar relocation that you need for the crossover...you'll need to custom make the lower mount (the farmboy thinks he can fab stuff at times.... :D ).

Hydro assist isn't an issue....and Jesse makes a straight tie rod with a clamp for a hydro assist ram.....

The straight tie rod cleans up the look of the front end once you have the crossover steering, IMO. You need the clamp so that toe can be adjusted while being able to have the ram mounted inline with the tie rod.

Wow.... I think my brain is going to blow. I need to figure out what I'm going to do and remember it all. I'm the GUY who orders all the wrong stuff at the right time. I'm planning on doing this in about a month or so. Now is the time I'm starting all my research and all and trying to figure all this crap out. Man, are these trucks like a money pit or what? Lol.. It's always something else I've just GOTTA have ya know?

Thats a pretty trick setup to run hydro assist without crossover.

Id like to see something setup off of the Fulltraction link bracket...but it would add serious lateral forces to it, and youd have to repowdercoat. You would also be doing some measuring to see if the drag link will clear the sway bar link. It would be fun, someone send me some brackets to play with.

Thanks! The guys at ORU did a superb job. Clearance was the biggest issue that we dealt with on the install. Running the trac bar to the Full Traction bracket, the ram to the bracket, and other ideas were all considered. With 6" of lift and stock steering linkage, there just isn't very much room. ORU's solution was simple, has no clearance issues, and works fantastic.

Interestingly, I initially took the truck to Off-Road Evolution in Fullerton, CA. They specialize in Rock Crawlers and hydraulic steering. They couldn't figure it out and butchered the install of the ram - badly. The ram got caught on my diff cover a couple miles from the shop after I picked the truck up. Aside from almost having a wreck, the PSC ram got ruined.

ok sorry for interrupting ur thread there sickharley but i need info and quick! so ur saying u can get a conversion over to coil springs for an 03 and not have n e leaf springs on the front end??? if this is so how much modifacation u have to make ur self how much and where can i buy it??

I posted a link to the kit. The kit is for 4"-8". It is FullTraction. All bolt on. Pretty much as easy as putting lift on. But this kit is meant for coilovers.

If you want stock height and/or coils by themselves you can swap a newer front axle/suspension in there. Youll need a newer front axle, radius arm brackets, radius arms, trac bar and drag link, coil buckets, and coils. Im not quite sure on the trac bar bracket; i think it would work just leaving the stock one, and having it slightly off line.

There is only a minimum of modification required. The sway bar brackets on the front axle have to be cut off (your installer could do this if you don't want to yourself). That's pretty much it, other than drilling a few holes in the frame rails.

The Full Traction kit is straight bolt-on otherwise.

I think Truck Toyz in Texas and Farmboys carry the Full Traction stuff. You could also contact Full Traction and see if any local shops can get the kit.

I know of a Full Traction kit installed here locally with the Dynatrac SD Combo on it.
The lower trac bar bracket got welded to the axle tube right next to the spring perch (like a triangle almost.....I'm sure you've seen trucks like this).

And nice user title......ass :D

Since you are in FL, hit up Jesse @ FarmboyFabrications.
His email: admin@farmboyfabrications.com

He's in Lakeland, FL

And yes, these trucks are money pits LOL

Yea we did a 2002 conv. to 2006 axle. Worked out great. Truck looks basicaly like mine but its a Std. cab long bed. Its not on my site yet so when I'm back at the shop Mon. I will post some pic's.

Hey Nick,

Haven't you guys done a coilover conversion front and rear on a 99-04 SD?

i talked to someone on phone on this forum here early and he said dont go with coil springs for pulling that there all bouncing hard out of the hole, what experience or light can u guys shead upon me on this. thats what i need these for my truck hasnt seen the road in 2 yrs!

I replied in the other thread about that...i can only see the coils hopping less.

Here's a pic from Nick's site of the one they built with coilovers and crossover steering and trac bar relocation.

All it needs is the straight tie rod.... :D

I thought the same thing....work of art there nick; whoever welding in that drivers side axle bracket is pretty top notch...but needs a straight tie rod :rockwoot:

ok i know u said aggie did a stock conversion but i dont know how to get a hold of him! so please tell me who to call to get these ordered or can it be done at stock height? whats the advantages or disadvantages to coil springs instead of leaf spings??

Most people do the conversion to get the better turning radius.

Best bet to get the parts is to get the entire front axle, frame and steering out of a wrecked 05+ truck.
