12 valve mains

I think if it has one oil drain in the side it has 14mm two drains 12mm

^^^ Yep what he said. All old blocks with 4 freeze plugs where 14mm mains, with one oil drain. 3 Freeze plugs where 12mm mains and 2 oil drains. Most 98 12v had 12mm mains because it was a 53 block.

Ok thanks. So it is probably best to make sure new block I am getting has 14mm mains?

I'm no block expert, but I recall from a few years back that it was commonly posted and reposted that the 94 & 95's had 14mm mains and the 96' and newer trucks had 12mm.

97's had 14mm also.

I've got a storm block in my 98' 12mm mains, 2 oil drains. After the rebuild, 14mm A1 mains.

Anyone ever heard of a 53 block in a 96? I picked up a block out of a 96 the other day and it has a big 53 stamped right on the side. I know the date stamp on the timing cover said 1996 but it could also not be the original motor.

Mine has a 53 block in my 97.... Its called an incore or S.T.O.R.M (Standard Thread O-Ring Metric) block, which means all the block fittings are metric thread. Storms also have 12mm main studs. They have a large 53 cast behind the power steering/vac pump

Not all are 53.. Mines a 98, 12 mm, two drains, no 53..

I know my 98 12V is a non 53. and it has the two drains. When I looked I saw a 5 where the 53 would be.

some of the 53 blocks are on the pass side behind the oil filter as the 97 i had was and just sold a 01 that was a 53 on the pass side too nothing on the drivers side. and i bought a 98 24v motor to put in a buddys truck was a 56 block casting . 53, 54, 55, 56 and mexican blocks you never know what you are going to have flip a quarter.
