I now see why people really like the 2nd gen 12 valves!!! :rockwoot:

I bought a 1996 5 speed, E/C cab 2wd last week, thinking it to be "just another truck to drive".
I loaded it up yesterday to head over to DieselWrencher's place (Awesome guys, he and his brother, by the way!) and I had an axle, trans, transfer case and some other odds and ends loaded on it.

Rides smooth as glass, nice creature comforts, roomy, but the power!
And that's only a stock 215 horse!

I really love my 1st gen stuff and I've owned another '96 Dually that had a VE engine because the old engine was bad, but I'd never experienced for myself the 2nd gen P-7100 experience.
Now I don't have to ask :what: because now I see it.

Somehow, I can see wanting more of this. :D

Are you being serious? Imagine driving a duramax if you think that is good! I consider stock 2nd gens doggy log wagons.....

WOW WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DRIVING? my stock 01 chevy 5.3 gasser has way more power than my 97 ppumped 12v 5 speed stock....way more....now throw some sticks at it and a good little s300 and it puts it to shame....but wow i never heard in my life anyone say a stock 12v is "powerfull"...tourquy yeah mabey,,,,,but powerfull no way.

I cant wait till you mod it, just to hear your post on the power felt!

First gen loyalists are blind huh? haha :D
It's like anything else, people are stubborn, it's not like you have to do what they say.
There's also a lot to be said for the reliabilty of a stock VE pump and it's "common user" repairability.

I'm not all that keen on turning them up a bunch, myself, but a little more fuel and the ability to spool the turbo a bit quicker down low would please me greatly. :D

Lotta' varied opinions here.
All of this over being happily surprised at how a truck I had misgivings about runs?
I thought I was talking about a 2nd gen, not a D-Max, Powerstroke or a CPU controlled Dodge.

Someone musta' missed the title. :D

Dont bother trying to get a 1st gen person in a truck newer than 98.5.

That box with wires is full of witchcraft and they will just end up burning the truck claiming it a demon.

Oh, we are all happy you are happy just pointing out the similarity between you and a Amish man driving a 95 Saturn. He would be in awe but have no clue how good it could be. We are the guys in Porsches looking down our noses.....

Mmm, my 6000 dollar total 95 paid for versus 5 years of payments or 50,000 more or less. I think I'll stick with my 95. Kinda thinking the old truck might out run a new one also.

I don't like to turn them up much either:hehe:

I've seen some beautiful 1st gens. I do love 2nd gens, but after driving or owning a little of everything there is a reason i drive what i do. Puts the rest to shame.

The 2012 trucks are pretty nice. Smooth driving and tons of power from the factory but for the price of a new one you can build something more powerful and just as smooth for a fraction of the cost of a new truck.

Actually, newer than '98, unless there were 12 valve Cummins in 98.5? :D
Nice try at sarcasm, though.

Don't lump me into the narrow idea of a "1stgenner", as I do not fear electronics.
I'm one of the guys who put a 5.9 Dodge Magnum engine into a '68 Dart and I did NOT use a carburetor for "the easy way out"!

One thing about me, I try to understand what it is a person SHOULD be aware of on a vehicle, not fear it just because I don't understand it.

One fact I have found is that if you leave a commonrail idle in cold weather and ignore people who warn you NOT to do so, then the resulting injector failures that lead to cylinder washdown and burndown are just as much the user's fault as the Corporation's.
Limit idle time on these trucks and you increase overall life expectancy.

As far as the VPs, it's mostly heat and fuel supply related, get rid of the heat and address the fuel problems and they will run hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles.
Some do anyway, it's a crapshoot.

In truth, the biggest reason I'll likely never own a newer vehicle is pure and simple: COST and mileage.
Why pay 50-60k for a truck that gets 15 mpg, when I can pay $3500 for one that gets upwards of 23?

Coming from a 94 toyota 22re.. I'll admit, my stock 97 dodge felt pretty nice.

It belonged to a dip**** who didn't know a thing about afc tuning. No plate and the star wheel was a 1/4" from the afc spring. It bogged down and smoked like crazy unless you eased into it.

The 7" bullhauler stacks were downright embarrassing  I'm so glad they're gone! :Cheer:

About two hours and a 4000 gsk and I could have it blowing right threw the clutch unless it lifted the head first! Those pumps are easy to get power out of.
