What's the general consensus or experience with the following setup:

- 66/73/1.1 T4 over an HT3B w/22cm housing (I have both in my possession, iirc the S300 exhaust housing is a 1.1 - it's the big turbo from the BD towing twins setup)
- pdi t4 manifold with ED external adapter
- external gate b/t turbos to control the speed on the '3B

This is going on a 95 12V, with a P&P (possible machined-off intake and drop-in cam too). Will be running an electric fuel pump with external regulator, and I'm eyeing a set of SDX 5x.016's to top it off.

Think it will be a terrible setup - as far as spooling characteristics go? I'm hoping the tight housing and external gate on the 3b will be good for some decent spooling time and breathing abilities, and hopefully get me to the 700whp range.

i think either your primary is too small or your secondary is too big.

either of you care to expand on that some? Would the usable operating range of both turbo's combined be very narrow?

What's the difference (obviously compressor/turbine maps, etc.) between this close setup and the BD towing twins - which are fairly close in size?

Looks to me like the primary is too small on the exhaust side of things. You might be able to get away with it if you gate it large enough or go to a 26cm. You would be better off stepping the secondary down to a 62 or even a 64 for that matter.

It would be awesome if I had some maps to look at for both chargers to help get a better understanding of "what would be" with this combination, for curiosity's sake. From some basic searching, the secondary's performance is near that of the Super-B Special, no?

What would the performance characteristics be like?

how good do you think you could spool that 66/73/1.1 as a single? it doesnt seem like it would be a quick spooling turbo. in a set of twins the secondary spools even slower. so your overall spool up probably wouldnt be good. it would take a big external gate to help keep exhaust flowing enough to keep drive pressure down as that 22cm housing is too small as well. like said above, a 26cm housing would be better.

the intent is to run a 44 or 50mm gate between chargers, and I would be monitoring drive pressure between both turbine stages. How fast would the 66/73 spool with headwork and a possible cam? That's something I hope to find out

The 66 flows around 80lbs/min and the 3b flows just over 90lbs/min. Way too close in flow to make it worthwhile.

honestly that set really seems like it would be a waste of time, even if the turbos are just laying around. I would sell them and save up for a better setup. A super b over S475 could get you close to 700 IMO. And they would spool before three grand.

same as everyone else said X2 or 3

Is the intent of matching turbos in a compound setup not to try to match operating points and mass flow rates?

also, i was under the impression that the superB was a little small for 700hp compound setup, no?

for clarification, the s300 has a .91 A/R, divided T4 exhaust housing, per one of the JD turbo p/n threads.

to keep both chargers in the middle of their maps, the primary often flows near twice what the secondary will.

throw a 26cm housung on the 3b and i think you would love that setup! guys love that s300 with the .91 a/r and the 73mm wheel

guys love a 66/73 as a secondary? thats news to me. especially over such a small primary.

You'd be wise to heed this mans advice...he know's a thing or two about building a set of twins and matching up chargers to work together ;)

I meant as a single guys were loving the spoolup and power vs one with .8 a/r, as far as the 3b, I don't know that much about them! sorry:bang I didn't realize they would flow that close together

^thanks for the clarification-

I will say that my original intentions were for a 62 or 64/71/T4 non-gated (even talked to Glenn @ ED about the setup with external gate) over the 3B/22cm with external gate.... then I happened across the dastardly BD turbo and that was that.
