Addition to Smokem's AFC SIMPLIFIED thread. Now locked.

no dice with that scenario..... even with 131's and 5x14's my boost response was much better with tighter afc

i mean like 5x18s or 20s. and of course you'd have to tune it in. the guy that bought my old ppump 24v ran a 13mm pump with 200s and 131s when he was driving on the streets and loved it

I ran 5x20s with 181s in 131 seats and it was just as smokey part throttle as it was with 8mm comps. Big injectors, in my limited experience, are more a contributor to part throttle un tuneable smoke than anything else. I always suggest more delivery valve and less injector (5x14s-5x16s) for the street.

how were your egts running those? did you ever run complete 131s(valve and seat)?

Part throttle was very hot, about 100* more than what I run presently (5x16s 155*, the 5x20s were 145*). No, in my experience the 181 seats by themselves result in less than crisp injection due to poor sealing associated with their design. I have run about 8 sets of delivery valves and 5 sets of injectors through this truck and i'm very confident there was no loose tolerance between the 181 valve and 131 seat creating the lack of difference in smoke I saw.

So far I'm finding what he said to be the case. The 5x16s were very tunable with the Comp DVs. Just changed to 5x18s, while it is faster, it's not fun to drive.

I thought 131s with my 6x16s would work well but they didn't. It was clean but a lot less boost and power.

my 181s were 2x cleaner then these 191s but the 191s were worth 10psi of boost on my 67/71. Now this 62 only makes 50ish with the 191s if I go back to the 181 and loose 10psi it would suck!

Id still try them, should still make 50psi.

Just built another one of these to try on my AFC. I built one of these manual boost controller to use on my first two turbos. They worked pretty good. We'll see how they work on an AFC. I have to pickup some 1/4 air line to replace my reference line before i can stick it on.

Tried to use a 215 gov spring today, and it was way too stiff. Had full travel at 95 psi with wheel all the way loose.

Same here. My 6x16s smoke all the time with this setup. With the 191s in it haze was terrible as well. Went to a set of 179 dv's and they have less idle haze but are still smokey at part throttle.

I had some 7x14s in it and they were way cleaner, but they didnt make near the power. Going to try some 6x13s and see if they are a happy medium...

What's 179's? Similar to 131?

My 191s and 5x16s are horrible with the haze especially on 100% hydraulic oil. Low end smoke went up quite a bit going from 181 to 191 but boost went up 10psi. I dont want to give up the 10 psi but I do want to give up the haze and low end smoke. I plan on swapping my brothers 181s for my 191 so I'm 100% sure the 191 are the common denominator...

I'm hoping to get some of Smokem's highest flowing 7mm DV's to go with my 7x.012 SAC's when I get back form sandland.

I also plan to run 131's with some 8x?? VCO's 9they need rebuilt first) when I want to tame it down a bit.

For now the 131's and 7x.02's are nice but deffinately not the best combo.

They came out of a 175hp engine in a fedex truck. They have 181 style seats. Other then that i just know they lowered idle haze and i only lost a few psi of boost with them. They make my truck lope when i put in gear and the engine is cold though.

Looks pretty similar to the picture of mine in post #5 in this thread. I guess great minds think alike:hehe:

btw.... they work great!

Yeah, read this thread when it started then posted later after I forgot what I'd read :nail:

Need to get some air line so I can stick this on. Been playing with it on the bench, and looks like it will work well here. I'm going to use a push connect fitting going into the valve, and I'll mount the valve directly to the AFC. With the push connect fitting, I'll be able to unhook the line easier.

you sure that was not a 160 gov spring?

Yeah, I've known this truck since it was new- I'm the second owner.

I backed off the preload all the way and ramped up pressure from 60 psi to 95 (on the bench) before it bottomed in the housing.

Gonna try the manual boost controller/lighter spring tomorrow.
