Another rusty ugly budget drag truck

The truck fixed itself, well kinda fixed. I went out to check fluid level and saw the gauge jump when I selected a gear. So I quickly pulled it in the yard, I left it out in the swail after rope towing home. It drove fine into yard. Fluid is on the mid level of dipstick but kind of patchy on there so maybe it's splashing in it. Accumulator psi is measuring 120 in all fwd gears at idle. It doesn't move in reverse. And in revers and nuetral it is making noise coming from near the valvebody. Kind of like a buzzing. I know for a fact I had zero pressure when I rope towed it home so I guess something stuck in the valvebody and freed itself after sitting. The fluid is not black, it does smell burnt though. Maybe when the pressure dropped it burned clutches and clogged the filter and that's the noise im hearing. I will pull the pan and take a look.

Heck yeah. Maybe a fresh filter, clean the valve body and some hydro fluid if there's not too much in the pan and you can get by for a bit!

Now to figure out what failed first. Did line pressure drop and the clutches burn because I left it in D. Or were the clutches burning and then they clogged the filter and caused the pressure to drop.
I never went past 1/4 throttle and drove about 2miles. Any chance the transmission will be usable after all his clutch material in the pan?

That is a ton of material holy cow. I wouldn't expect it to live long.

Wow that sucks! I grenaded my Allison, turned the converter purple (no not a sun coast purple) and welded clutches together and my pan was more clean.

Looks like a tear down is in order.

Is it for sure clutch material? Looks bad, it definitely needs to come apart

I don't know. Never been inside an auto trans other than change the filter. Looks like it's time to learn.

Get yourself an atsg manual off of the webz. $40 well spent. If the truck can be down for a few extra days the best way to learn is to disassemble and reassemble the trans several times so you get an idea of how things go together and to get it where you don't have spare parts left over. Worst part is dealing with all of the trans fluid in the dang thing. It never wants to stop running out of every little nook and cranny!

While you are doing the practice you can get a good look at what parts need replaced. They aren't that bad and you don't need many special tools. I built a compressor for the OD spring similar to what big blue used on the junker for next to nothing. Other than that a set of calipers and feelers and a slide hammer for the front pump. Take your time, use trans gel or similar trans lube on parts, soak the clutches, double check your work, and you will be golden. You may actually be surprised how simple these torqueflite trannys are. I got lucky and my clearances came out within spec without changing much. I used a paint marker to mark things when they were finished and torqued to spec as to not miss anything.

Low/reverse servo cocked in the bore and trashed the band. My neighbor helped me pull it apart and is helping with the rebuild.

Im learning the hard way here. I have the transmission back in the truck and with tv zip tied im seeing 180-190psi line pressure. The shifts are very late at 4100rpm. I have no overdrive. The shifts feel weak and the lockup is weak. I verified the electronic side of od is working and I can see a 10-20psi blurp with line pressure when I command it. I have tried backing tv off a half inch or so and the line pressure goes down to 130ish and shifts about 3600rpm. Still does not engage overdrive. I plan on testing the pressures more thoroughly and recording them and will go from there with troubleshooting. I have read quite a bit about getting the shifts down but cannot find any reason for the loss of overdrive. Maybe a blockage in valvebody. I have only driven about 5miles so far but I figured I would update the thread to fish for help.

Letting out some frustration. As you can see i still havent put the short bed on.

My neighbor did 90% of the assembly without me. I was kind of upset because I wanted to learn. All stock clutch counts. Just a regular rebuild. He replaced both bands and also the reverse drum. I brought the od housing into my work and compressed the spring. Then brought it back to him to throw clutches in and then back to work to compress and install snap ring. Of course when we went to bolt it on all the gears did not align in the od housing. He gave me the intermediate shaft to use to align everything so I brought it back to work and released the spring and aligned the gears and then re-installed the snap ring. I am confident I can do the next rebuild on my own. I did not install the twisted billet input so I may have it apart again soon. I also reused the stock converter so thats an additional weakpoint.

I have monitored line psi and shifting closely. With the tv about 3/4 open and zip tied I have 125psi at idle. This allows all gear shifts and has lockup/od. Although when slowing down will not shift into first gear, even if I come to a complete stop. I can put it in manual low and go into first. Or place it back into park/nuetral and then back into D and it will go into manual low. Also seems that after the first time shifting into od it will stay engaged. So shifting into 3 will just go onto od.
I also tried with the tv about 7/8 open and am seeing 150psi at idle. 1-2-3 shift correctly but i have no od or lockup at all. It also down shifts correctly and takes off in first gear.
With the tv still 7/8 I monitored gov psi. It is high. 50psi @ 25mph and 100psi and 50mph.

Im reading non stop about valvebody setup and tuning but getting frustrated.

Last night I connected the tv cable and drove the truck very easy, gov pressure is still high 50psi@30mph and 100psi@50mph. I then checked line pressure and it is 95psi, driving normal it didnt seem to rise at all up to 50mph but thats with very little pressure on the pedal. With the cable hooked up and accelerating normal it is shifting at 1500rpm. It does have lockup. It definitely does not have overdrive. When slowing down it will not come out of third gear, even takes off in third gear after a complete stop. If i place it into nuetral and then back into gear it will shift 1-2-3 and then stays in third gear.

Just located a pdf of the atsg manual so its time to learn.

Set tv arm back to about 7/8 and went for a spin with gauge on the od port. I am seeing 125psi at the od port. I dont feel anything different in the transmission or see rpm drop. So its safe to say the od sol is working. It still starts in third gear unless i come to a complete stop and shift to neutral.

So i have a few issues after rebuild.
Gov psi is double mph.
Not downshifting out of third.
No overdrive.
