I am just curious to know if anybody has ever had as much trouble with a nv4500 as i have! i have went through input shaft, 5th gear TWICE! even with the nut WELDED ON, 3rd gear and counter shaft and when 3rd broke i had it rebuilt with all new bearings and seals and then last night i lost 3rd again and 4th at the same time... i only had 1 2 5 and reverse !!! My friend thought it was the main shaft and which he has only heard of one other person messing it up. But we got it pulled out and popped the cover off and everything seemed to be fine.. I just dont get it?!? i thought these things were tough. I dont read much about people having troubles with them. Maybe its just time to put a 6 speed in it i dont know what do you all think?

check out the top cover. make sure you did not break a fork or a fork rail. i drive the crap out of mine and never had an issue besides the clutch not holding enough. 150k miles and still works great. maby try getting an exchange trans from somewhere, that way you get an entirely new unit

Ya we looked it over pretty good last night with the cover off... I run mine pretty darn hard to but since the last couple times of messing with it ive just been keeping the box on 3 i have no idea why this is happening!

Have someone else work on it and maybe get good parts the first time

mine is junk too.. i lost 5th gear twice and now it just ate up all the synchros imm just buy a new one on a count of theyre almost as much to rebuild as they are brand new

I just tore mine down after stripping three teeth right off 3rd gear on the counter shaft.

nv 4500

check the mainshaft and countershaft for a abnormal amount of endplay.* and also check the case to see if its square.

ok info me on this....the NV4500 are the 5 speeds and the NV6500 are the 6 speeds right?

What causes these to mess up ive never had this encounter on mine or anything like that...sorry im not trying to derail the thread or anything like that.

Yeah we just lost the NV4500 in our Chevy dump truck today. Not sure what happened but it did not sound good when we pulled it off of the interstate.

You broke the front end off of the mainshaft. It will not look like its broke unless you put the trans in 3rd or 4th and spin it by hand.

I blew 3rd gear in pieces twice. Once my input shaft did a full twist before it snapped. The problem was that the builder was setting endplay too loose. It is tight now & holding up fine....for now. This might be because it is sitting in the garage in pieces getting painted. LOL This is the last draw though, it blows this time....NV5600 here I come.

i have gone through 3 of them 2nd one was 3rd gear and 3rd one well lets just say i cracked the case in half now i am rebuilding #4 and 5 always good to have a spare sitting around also need a new bellhousing now because softball size holes in them are not good so i have been told

I have no idea im trying to figure this out myself!! Im just wondering if people have as much trouble with the 6 speeds? if they dont it might be worth the money to buy one. the only draw back is ive been told parts are almost impossible to come by.

The nv5600 is a 6 speed, the nv4500 is a 5 speed. There is another 6 speed that is called the G56 used in 06 up trucks. Both 6 speeds are very expensive to build, but they are twice as strong as the nv4500. The nv5600 has reverse all the way right & up, the G56 is on the left & up [shifter]. My brother just blew 4th gear out of his 04.5 a few months back, found a local tranny shop who built him a new unit for $1800 installed. My brother hauls 16k# quite often with his Smarty on sw1 & his foot buried in the throttle, very whiplash driving habits. The nv5600 lasted 125k hard towing/racing miles at 550hp.
