I've broken some stuff...

Followed by 4 5th gear inner splined gear failures...none of this would have bothered me had the transmission been covered under the warranty it was sold with...

I would say all you guys that are breakn parts need to learn how to drive is my guess

Or you need to learn to drive, so you can break parts LOL :evil
All of my 5th gear problems are attributed to the trans builder

I am just curious to know if anybody has ever had as much trouble with a nv4500 as i have! i have went through input shaft, 5th gear TWICE! even with the nut WELDED ON, 3rd gear and counter shaft and when 3rd broke i had it rebuilt with all new bearings and seals and then last night i lost 3rd again and 4th at the same time... i only had 1 2 5 and reverse !!! My friend thought it was the main shaft and which he has only heard of one other person messing it up. But we got it pulled out and popped the cover off and everything seemed to be fine.. I just dont get it?!? i thought these things were tough. I dont read much about people having troubles with them. Maybe its just time to put a 6 speed in it i dont know what do you all think?

Im gonna guess that the case is warped and is either congributing or causing those failures. The NV5600 is a weaker trans so going to a 6spd wont help.

Really, I think your driving style is killing it. Given what Ive seen these transmissons take without breaking well above your power level. I dont know how the hell your doin this.

nv 5600 junk I would rather run a 4500 I know of some good 1100 hp trucks sled pulling and don't break them

I was towing 16k# pulling a hill & gave it more fuel....once the turbo lit, I heard clunk. I don't feel I did anything wrong, every tooth broke completely off of 3rd.

Most tranny shops will tell you that the 4500 is tougher than the 5600's. Welding a nut for fifth gear is not the smartest thing to do. All that does is screw up the hardening of the mainshaft and cause unfixable failures. The 6 speeds have a very weak mainshaft and junk synchros plus are twice as much to rebuild. For setting preload on the 4500, you should not have any up and down or in and out play in the input shaft. But you should be able to turn the input and hold the tailshaft with very little holding pressure. You are talking about a tranny designed to hold 400ft-lb not 1200. LOL IMO, 6 speed is weaker and cost more so not a good choice. Tim

Wow alot of negative 5600 talk. I was under the assumption it pretty tough. Although I know the 4500 has got to be tough when there are units out there with over 500,000 on them.

Anyone who wants to trade me, I have a nv4500 with your name on it. I will gladly take a nv5600.

Hey guys i just wanted to say thanks for all the reply's everybody i talk to think im just crazy for it breakin this much im glad to hear that im not alone!! But to tell you the truth all of us that have broken them a bunch all the parts that broke were simalar. I saw quite a few broke countershafts and 3rd gear's and 5th gears and input shafts of course but you aint makin power unless youve broken your stock input shaft right? haha. Well hopefully when they get it back together it will hold for awhile. Also i was thinking the other day would a 4wd 3rd gear launch be harder on the tranny than sled pulling?

I might have broke a tranny or 2. :hehe: My tranny has been out of the truck enough that the threads are wore out in the bellhousing. 25-30 times.
parts that break: teeth off of input shaft, nose off of mainshaft, teeth off of 3rd, teeth off of 5th, rear end off of countershaft, and the teeth off of 5th clutch hub.
As far as a 3rd gear launch, build boost and don't just drop the clutch. I wish somebody would make some parts out of 300m and give me a set to try to break.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....LOL...LOL
Now that has got to be the statement of the day......
Seems I remember one year at the old Muncie show I hear this 12v getting twisted into orbit rpm wise. Then I hear the old step left move on the clutch and turn around to see this gentleman who was chatting with me so nicely earlier turned into someone who was making a NV4500 beg for mercy. Then I hear.....BANG and later I find Wayne doing a pro-stock style tranny swap to make the next round which he did.So break a few you say...I'd say you did your best to ensure the fine people who made those trannies kept their jobs...LOL.

feelemcummin...
I do not think the SBC input shafts are or were ever billet, however I could be wrong.

Mine is now almost ready to slip past the 200k mark in my truck. It has had three different style clutches in in and one upgrade of the input shaft for the double disc which was done a 100k ago.The 5th gear nut was upgraded by EEP back then adn still is in good shape when we serviced it last year and put the new double disc in at East Coast Diesel.I guess my luck is due to mine only sees street duties but I can say that when its time to step left off the clutch pedal it will go and never has left me down yet.......Andy

if I have to have a manual tranny, give me a 4500 every time. I've owned a couple 5600 trucks. Got a buddy who went through six of them in under 250k (hauling fast and heavy in 6th). Can't really speak for the G56, but I've got no interest in them either.

built auto FTW

I would LOVE to rid myself of the 5 spd and drop in a full billet slushbox.I have been given a quote to do it and just have not pulled the string yet.......Andy

Ya i could never talk myself into side steppin my clutch i dont care how many people try and talk me into it... I would rather let her slip... After i get this main shaft in the only thing else that hasnt been replaced will be first second and fourth gears.. i forgot to add above that when i had the new bearings installed i also had all new syncros put in.

ok im at whits end... last night i lost third again pulled the tranny and i could see major carnage on the bottom shaft.. the gear was half rounded off soo this will make for the second countershaft and 3rd gear!!! What in the world am i doing wrong??? like you all say... this thing is pretty much bullet proof for what all i have.. my buddy has a 1,200 hp pulling truck with one of these in and hes only broke 2nd once!! who all votes for new case?

I vote that you buy a used one with 75K or less from a junk yard and start over. Use your current pile of parts for parts and of course slip in that larger input shaft.

Something is definitely wrong with your case or your rebuilding tolerances.
