Anybody had this much trouble with NV4500?

yep i had the shaft in stock changing it out myself, should get it in tommorow

To bad I didnt see this a long time ago. I have an NV4500 for sale with 1 3/8" input from South Bend we have been trying to sell. 5th gear is fixed. Out of a 4x4. Has less than 10,000 miles on it.

my midwest transmission went out friday pulling my tractor home from a tractor pull. Called midwest today and they said to send it in to have it fixed! Hopefully they will cover it!

Damn bud...I knew about 3rd gear and 5th gear on the NV4500 but never heard of people having that many problems with one. I'm looking to to swap my auto for a 4500 but reading this thread has me a little worried now lol.

jd plowboy does you trans have the cast iron tail housing, mine did and turned out to be all my problems

Yes it does but everybody says the cast tail is better?...When i bought this tranny from midwest i sent the input shaft out of my old tranny cuz it was billet 1- 3/8's allready soo they wouldnt need to put one of theirs in. But when i pulled it out i noticed a tiny chip in the gear on the backside. Not thinking about it i sent it in and shortly after i got my new tranny back and i put it in my truck and ever since the first day it had a gear rolling noise or vibration in 4th gear no matter how easy or hard i was on it.. and it would gear roll really bad coming on to powerband... Well when i pulled the tranny and drained oil there were no metal shavings or anything soo i was wondering what the heck. so i popped a cover off and sure enough it popped 2 teeth off the input shaft and 2 teeth off countershaft. So im thinking if i had went a head and let them put in one of their input shafts i would have been perfect because i believe my input shaft is what caused it.

The nv5600 is a 6 speed, the nv4500 is a 5 speed. There is another 6 speed that is called the G56 used in 06 up trucks. Both 6 speeds are very expensive to build, but they are twice as strong as the nv4500. The nv5600 has reverse all the way right & up, the G56 is on the left & up [shifter]. My brother just blew 4th gear out of his 04.5 a few months back, found a local tranny shop who built him a new unit for $1800 installed. My brother hauls 16k# quite often with his Smarty on sw1 & his foot buried in the throttle, very whiplash driving habits. The nv5600 lasted 125k hard towing/racing miles at 550hp.

G56 started in 4.5 NOT 06

The G56 isnt as strong a transmission as the NV's in my opinion.

Been discused before (on MANY forums)and MOST disagree especially the pullers who have had both

The pullers I know of that have ran them cant keep them together. Glad to hear some are having better luck with them though.

JD Plowboy i got my trans at midwest as well, it also came with the cast iron tail housing everytime we broke it, we put it on the new one becasue we thought it was heavier duty, if you look up on quad4x4 website you can see the marks that the transfer case leaves on the tailhousing. i threw that cast iron housing in the trash, i have had no problems since but no to many miles on the new trans.

I am considering ordering a full rebuild kit for my nv4500 that has 318k miles on it. Its starting to shift hard, and 3rd gear grinds if you dont let the rpms drop below 1500 or so.

My buddy can rebuild it for me, I just have to get the parts.

Any suggestions?
